Destiny Stealer: Dying Too Much

dying too much blog

There is a sneak attack that Satan uses to keep you from your destiny: it is getting you to die way too much to your sin by overreacting to it, this kills your passion—it even can kill God-given passion.

A Powerful, Transformed Life

To experience your destiny through a radically transformed life, start with renewed thinking. It is interesting that while writing about finding God’s will for your life, the Apostle Paul says we must first change our thinking by renewing our minds.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is …” Romans 12:2 NIV

Die to Your Old Sin Nature

The process of renewing your mind involves a principle called dying to yourself. There are several verses in the Bible that talk about dying to the sinful nature or old self and allowing God to live through us. This is a necessary process for transforming your life. However, this is also a misunderstood principle.

Satan wants us to take this to the extreme and believe that we must die to all of our heart desires and the plans that we have.

Did You Die to All Desires?

In reality, dying to ourselves does not mean that we cannot have any desires or ideas of our own. If that were the case, you would become a robot for God. God wants us to be His sons and daughters and to have authority on the Earth.

Creativity from God

God created the Heavens and the Earth and we are created in His image—Genesis 1:27. Therefore, we all have the ability to be co-creators expanding His Kingdom on Earth. Whether you realize this or not, we are all creative. You have a God-given ability and passion inside of you to create things around you. You have a built-in desire to contribute to things greater than yourself, and to be a part of changing the world around you through God’s unlimited love and power.

I often jokingly say that God was trying to prophesy this through Bruce Willis in the old movie Die Hard. God wants to give us good things and once our motives are right, He can do this without limit. It is no wonder that so many people do not know their destiny; it may be because they have died to any desire they once had.

Dying to yourself means that your heart has the right intentions in dying, because not all of our desires are necessarily from God. I remember when I was young I learned how to spell the word Christian. A lady told me it is spelled Christ plus the acronym i-a-n, which stands for “I am nothing.” I grew up believing the lie that I was not allowed to be anything. I realize now that God wants us to be His creations—and to do what He created us to do. It will require dying to our sinful desires but also living a life full of His creativeness.

Revived Desires

When you renew your mind, you are powerful! And when you focus on God—finding happiness in Him—your passions will be revived, even after a harsh, enemy sneak attack designed to kill your desires and passions.

Delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4 NIV

Desires Are Needed

God will give us a passion, or strong desire, to fulfill something in our lives. Passion is important because it brings about a divinely-inspired drive to accomplish things for God. And while it is not good to die to all desires, we need balance.

For example, we do not want to be too prideful, but on the other extreme, we do not want false humility. We often quote the Bible verse, “He must become greater; I must become less.” John 3:30 NIV. The problem with false humility is that when you try to become less without allowing God’s character and gifts in you to become greater, you wind up empty.

What to Do

Hold onto your God-given passions and desires. Let God remind you of what they are if it has been a long time since you died to them. You have permission to be passionate and creative! Your desires are an essential tool designed to lead you to the heart of your destiny.

Blessings,

doug-sig

    Destiny Stealer: Dying Too Much
    /Doug Addison / 2014.11.13

There is a sneak attack that Satan uses to keep you from your destiny: getting you to die way too much by overreacting to your sin, which kills your passion. It can even kill your God-given passion.

    A powerful, transformed life
To experience your destiny through aradically transformed life, start with renewed thinking. It is interesting that while writing about finding God’s will for your life, the Apostle Paul says we must first change our thinking by renewing our minds.

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Romans 12:2 NIV

Die to your old sin nature
The process of renewing your mind involves a principle called dying to yourself. There are several verses in the Bible that talk about dying to the sinful nature or “old self” and allowing God to live through us. This is a necessary process for transforming your life. However, it is also a misunderstood principle.

Satan wants us to take this to the extreme and believe that we must die to all of our heart desires and plans that we have.

Did you die to all desires?
In reality, dying to ourselves does not mean that we cannot have any desires or ideas of our own. If that were the case, you would become a robot for God. God wants us to behis sons and daughters and to have authority on the earth.

    Creativity from God
God created the Heavens and the earth and we are created in His image (Genesis 1:27). Therefore, we all have the ability to be co-creators expanding His Kingdom on earth. Whether you realize this or not, we are all creative. You have a God-given ability and passion inside to create things around you. You have a built-in desire to contribute to things greater than yourself, and be a part of changing the world around you through God’s unlimited love and power.

I often jokingly say that God was trying to prophesy this through Bruce Willis in the old movie “Die Hard.” God wants to give us good things and once our motives are right, He can do this without limit. It is no wonder that so many people don’t know their destiny; it may be because they have died to any desire they once had.

Dying to yourself means that your heart has the right intentions because not all of our desires are necessarily from God. I remember when I was young I learned how to spell the word Christian. A lady told me it is spelled “Christ” plus the acronym i-a-n, which stands for “I am nothing.” I grew up believing the lie that I was not allowed to be anything. I realize now that God wants us to be His creation. It will require dying to our sinful desires but also living a life full of His creativeness.

    Revived desires
When you renew your mind, you are powerful! And when you focus on God, finding happiness in Him, your passions will be revived, even[NE1]  after a harsh enemy sneak attack designed to kill your desires and passions. “Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4

    Desires are needed
God will give us a passion or strong desire to fulfill something in our lives. Passion is important because it brings about a divinely-inspired drive to accomplish things for God. And while it is not good to die to all desires, we also need balance.

For example, we do not want to be too prideful but on the other extreme, we do not want false humility. We often quote the Bible verse, “He must become greater and I must become less…” John 3:30. The problem with false humility is when you try to become less without allowing God’s character and gifts in you to become greater, you wind up empty.

    What to do
Hold onto your God-given passions and desires. Let God remind you of what they are if it has been a long time since you died to them. You have permission to be passionate and creative! Your desires are an essential tool designed to lead you to the heart of your destiny.

Wow. Again with Romans 12:2. You once told me (yrs ago) at a seminar in Oregon that “I could not see it now, but what I was doing would impact millions later” (You knew my sister Barbara Parker in L.A.) I moved to Canada 25 yrs ago. You had a prophetic word in the elevator of the hotel we were both staying in that I “ran away”. That’s all you said but it stuck and has proven over the years to make sense. Suffice it to say I died to myself… my passions, dreams and goals years ago… and only now seek the “renewing of my mind”. That verse has been prevalent in my devotional time lately. God is affirming something through you, to me. I’m not sure exactly what that is at the moment. I read your blog frequently and this is the first comment I’ve ever left. It impacted me that much. I appreciate your passion and what God is doing through you.

Thank you for that reminder! I agree and I do battle with that based on what I hear leaders teachers say regarding that verse! So I suppress my desire to marry again! I’ve heard “what do you need a husband for when you have JESUS?” I’ve even asked God to take away any desires and to not want anything! To truly not want a thing except what He wants! How silly is that? Nothing but lies! So thank you for speaking this truth!

I love your prophetic words, your books, almost anything you have to say is a help and a blessing to me.
I think one of the things that has caused me to “die” inside is because I have made some mistakes, big mistakes in the past and I can’t forgive myself and see past those. I feel forgiven by God but inferior to step forward; that others will say “who does she think she is”. If you want to comment and/or encourage me I would really appreciate it.

      Hi Carol!
Boy I know where you are coming from. There is a very precious book by Mike Wilkerson called “Redemption: Freed by Jesus from the Idols we worship and the wounds we carry”
I cannot tell you how much this teaching helped me. It’s no bandaid, and gets to the root of shame, rejection…from others and the shame we feel about ourselves. Very scriptural and profound. Remember, the truth sets you free. As you partner with the Holy Spirit, He will bring you into great freedom…Just keep asking for Him to give you Heavens perspective and to teach you. I love how the Holy Spirit teaches. Bless you Carol!!

Carol, I was having trouble stepping out, making a mistake, trouble with past, and few other things. God showed me psalms 1, in the chapter it talking about seeking god and that everything our hand touch will be blessed. That includes our mistakes, past. Everything devil meant for bad will be restored for glory and blessing. This really helped me.

A brilliant word. Some who don’t understand this concept misuse it as a way to control others and prevent them coming into their destiny. False humility can sound right but the motives can be wrong. Thank you Doug for encouraging us to be all God wants us to be – a reflection of His beauty and creativity. How can we draw people to Jesus if we’re empty shells with nothing to offer?
