3 Ways to Break Through the Baggage and Be Bold

For God does speak—now one way, now another—though no one perceives it.
Job 33:14 NIV

This is a time like never before that we need to hear the voice of God in our lives. God is speaking all the time, but most people do not perceive it. Or they have not been trained to discern His voice from their own or other sources.

Let’s face it, the phrase “hearing God” or “the prophetic” has some baggage. Some people have been wounded along the way. But no matter what your experience has been, we must not throw out the baby with the bathwater! God still speaks today, and hearing His voice for yourself will activate you into a deeper relationship with Him.

1. Press in and ask

Just after Jesus taught the disciples to pray (Luke 11), He told two parables to activate it. One was of a man who needed bread in the middle of the night, so he came to a friend’s house and persisted in asking until he got it.

I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity he will surely get up and give you as much as you need. So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Luke 11:8–10 NIV

This is a time to ask, seek and knock, and have shameless audacity!

2. Know God’s heart

After that, Jesus went right into another parable that explains God’s heart as a father. This provides confidence and trust that God will speak to us.

“Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” Luke 11:11–13

If we have a preconceived belief that God is harsh or militant, we will interpret the things He says to us through a filter of fear. But God is a good, loving Father who gives good gifts to His children.

Go beyond believing that God wants to speak to you, and know that you can get bold and trust God to answer you. If you already hear Him—ask for more.

3. Break through fear

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV

Many people are afraid that they will be deceived or that what they are asking is not in God’s will. Trust God as a Father. Your heavenly Father does not want to be harsh or mean to you.

If you are trying to be perfect, there is no room for you to grow. God uses our mistakes to train us. I have made my share of mistakes—and I still do—but God uses them to teach me and help me make a greater impact later.

It’s time to press in, know God and break through our fears. God is ready to take you to the next level!

I was always afraid if I told people what God was speaking to me they would call me a liar or think I was crazy. Worst I might be miss interrupting. Then I realized the wide berth He gives you. And that when you get it wrong He speaks even louder. Praise God. Open your heart to God’s heart and he will protect your mouth. So they think your crazy they are still hearing God’s voice through you. Amen

    Doug,
I have been a partner and reading all the materials you have been sending me for just a few months, but what I have learned from you has shorten my growth by years.
For so many years I looked at God the Father as a angry God, but know Him now as a loving Father. Even now the tears are streaming down my face because I know He loves me.
You have opened up God’s word to me with new eyes and understanding like I have never known. Through you God is answering the prayer I have had for years. “God I want to know you.” Thank you for helping and equipping the Body of Christ with the tools and understanding to know God and be known by Him.
    Thank you for helping me.
You, Linda and your team are in my prayers. Elyce

My past was I was raised Jehovah witness and we were taught in teaching of fear and fear of Armagadon and I use to hide food in the wall’s where I lived and here I was learning about fear Jehovah never knew Him as Jehovah jireh my provider.your message really hit home with me about some say they know about God but really haven’t been seeking to hear him for themselves so they can know him personally for themselves without man-made interpetations

Thank you Doug, this was really helpful and I am truly grateful! I have not started your course, yet because I was at the back to back conferences I had asked for prayer about. They ended up speaking lies about me there to the leadership and telling me I cannot come back there for a year to anymore conferences. So I would appreciate prayer about that being reversed because of the lies. Thank you. 👑
