People everywhere seem to be drawn to the supernatural. A recent Gallup poll found that 84% of Americans long
for spirituality. Though a good number of people are not interested in
a traditional form of religion they do consider themselves spiritual. I
cant help asking, why has Christianity lost its appeal? After all,
Christ does have a great message.

Though God is all powerful too often
Christians themselves have lost track of His greatness. Many Christians
no longer believe that God speaks to us, gives us dreams, or performs
miracles. Because of this, we have allowed people to believe that only
psychics and those in New Age can know the future or interpret dreams
when in reality, God is the creator of all revelation.

People are looking for a power outside of
themselves to bring change in their lives. The Apostle Paul stated in 2
Corinthians 4:4 that The god of this age has blinded the minds of
unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the
glory of Christ, who is the image of God. It is our responsibility to
open their eyes to Gods true light (Acts 26:17-18).

In Acts 1:8 Jesus said, But you will
receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my
witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends
of the earth. The disciples received Gods power on the day of Pentecost
and they stayed in Jerusalem and Judea for a number of years. As they
began to venture out from there it is interesting to note what they
encountered.

Phillip was the first to go to Samaria
where he met Simon, a man who practiced sorcery. The people believed
that Simon had the great power of God (Acts 8:9-13). As Phillip
demonstrated Gods true power consequently even Simon believed and
became a Christian.

Saul and Barnabas were later sent out to
take the message of Jesus to the ends of the earth. Immediately they
encounter a sorcerer named Bar-Jesus on the Island of Paphos who had
even the government believing that he was a prophet (Act 13:6-12). In
this case Bar-Jesus did not receive the message of Jesus but opposed it
and he was literally blinded as a prophetic act to show the condition
of people if they chose to follow his teachings.

Our society today is in a similar
condition as in the Book of Acts where people are drawn to magic and
sorcery. Since many Christians have not valued or demonstrated the
supernatural gifts of God, most people are not aware that Gods power is
greater than the gods of this age. As we set out to be witnesses of
Jesus Christ and use our God-given spiritual gifts to demonstrate Gods
love and power to those in need, it will not be difficult to turn
people to the light of God.
