A New Sound from Heaven Awakens a Young Generation

A New Sound from Heaven Awakens a Young Generation
by Doug Addison

New sound from Heaven
I keep hearing God speaking over and over to me that there is a new sound that has already been released from Heaven. I have heard prophecies about a new sound coming and many musicians and worship leaders are searching for it. I have not yet heard this new Heavenly sound in any church but I can’t stop hearing it in the spirit.

Music sets the pace for everything. Since God is doing something new in the earth right now, it is only appropriate that it would flow through music as well. Anointed music communicates God’s desire and intention for each of us individually, for our church, our region and our generation. Worship music is not just leading songs that prepare our hearts to hear the Word of God, though there is great value in this. Worship is the cry of the Holy Spirit to lead us into His paths and higher purposes. The new sound will overtake us like a storm and will be different than the way we currently worship. It will catch the ear of a younger generation that has yet to experience God the way many of us have in the past. Prophetic music, radical dance, new songs, and art will be major keys to the new sound and will ultimately usher in one of the biggest revivals in Church history. Just as in previous moves of God, not everyone in the Church will receive the new sound or even recognize it is from God.

Revelation 14:2-4 NIV
And I heard a sound from heaven like the roar of rushing waters and like a loud peal of thunder. The sound I heard was like that of harpists playing their harps. And they sang a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders. No one could learn the song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth.

Learn from the last new sound
In the 1960’s a new sound from Great Britain swept the U.S. and the world. The Beatles came on the scene with a sound that took the essence of rhythm and blues and added a faster beat with a fun and exciting feeling to it. Most of their lyrics caused a generation of young people to feel empowered. But there was something special about that music that was almost anointed. James Ryle, in his book, Sons of Thunder, said that God showed him that the Beatles had a call of God but through circumstances and bad choices, they never found their greater destiny in the Kingdom of God. As a result, their gifts and music were used to usher in the biggest movement of Middle Eastern religion in U.S. history. God inspired the new sound and music but the enemy distorted it.

I often wonder if someone had prophetically recognized that a new sound was coming, could they have helped the Beatles discover their Kingdom gifts and callings? Had the Church known back in the early 1960’s that the new sound from Heaven was already in the pubs of Hamburg, Germany and Liverpool, England, would they have believed it?

I am declaring prophetically that the new sound is already on the earth today. Just as the Beatles influenced a generation away from God, so this new sound from Heaven will bring masses of this young generation to Him. This time it will not be stolen by the enemy.

Rock-n-roll music was not liked by the older generation. Churches tried to hold it back instead of embracing it as something that originated from God’s heart to reach young people, so it got counterfeited and perverted by the enemy. It was not until the Jesus People Movement that the new rock sound was allowed in churches. But this was ten years too late. In the early 1980’s John Wimber, the founder of the Vineyard Church movement, had a vision in which he saw “garage bands” leading worship in churches. Garage bands are talented musicians that are unknown to the world. Sure enough, our modern-day worship and praise teams are now the equivalent of garage bands of the past. Interestingly, John Wimber himself was one of the original members of the Righteous Brothers band before he dedicated his life to Christ.

Torch bearers are coming forward
On July, 16, 2009 I had a dream that was more of a spiritual experience. It was the night before I was to leave for a ministry trip to Bakersfield, California and I was taken in the spirit to the meeting I was about to attend. During the experience I was instructed to assemble black handheld electronic devices that looked like electric torches but required no electricity. They were powered by the Holy Spirit and would be used to do ministry at an entirely new level. As I screwed the handles to the torches, it created a sound in the spirit that was like no sound I have heard on earth. It had an electronic pitch and reverberated forever. The sound was so strange that it caused many Christians to get angry and I was attacked by many of them who did not want to hear this new sound. The next day, in real life, I arrived at the conference and even though I had never been to this building it was exactly as I had seen it in the experience.

I knew that God was releasing a new sound and a new anointing that will be so radical that many Christians would be tempted to reject it. The torches and the sound were reserved for a generation that will take it and run with it to new levels of God’s supernatural glory unlike we have ever seen. It was interesting to note that the very weekend that this dream/experience happened, the largest oil field in Bakersfield was discovered. God used this to confirm that we are about to discover something new and very big in the spirit. It is also significant that Bakersfield played a role in Country music’s revolutionary “Outlaw” movement of the 1970’s that brought a radical change to the sound coming out of Nashville. God wants to use places like Bakersfield, small unknown towns that are ripe for change and willing to go outside the box to bring God’s glory.

A few days later I was back home in Santa Maria, California, and I was telling my wife about the experience. We pulled up to a traffic light and saw two teenagers carrying a torch of fire running up the street yelling with joy. It looked like the Olympic torch with real fire and it happened in real life. God spoke to me that it is time to release the “torch bearers” who will take His light and love to the world like never before.

The sounds of the radio
In the late 1990’s my wife and I planted our first church near Kent State University in Ohio. God spoke to me that we would reach this city by the “sounds of the radio”. After experimenting with various types of music, it was a 16-year-old worship team member who stepped forward with an amazing set of Vineyard worship lyrics put to music of several popular songs from rock bands like Blink 182, Metallica, and Lit. The result was astonishing! As we learned to worship to a different style than we were accustomed to, we enabled young people to connect with God. It is similar to several revivalists like Charles Wesley, Martin Luther, and William Booth who put worship hymns to popular bar tunes and music of their day in order to reach people for Jesus.

Now, years later, I am a conference speaker and a traveling minister. Two years ago God directed me to redeem songs from the radio and show people how to worship to them. I began plugging my iPod into the sound system at churches and in the middle of my talks to reiterate a point. I play parts of songs like, “I Can See Clearly Now [the Rain is Gone]”, or “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”.  I personally think that Tom Petty’s, “I Won’t Back Down” really should be a worship song. Later, after we leave the church service, we can hear these songs play and immediately be able to worship God and bring the anointing into any setting and situation. I still believe in having worship teams and music, but I am  also trying to get outside the box to discover more of what God has for us and for others who do not know God yet.

Embracing the new sound
The new sound from Heaven that I heard was electronic but different than the typical electronic music today. It brought to mind the major switchover in music from Big Band in the 1940’s to Rock-n-Roll music in the 1950’s. The previous generation did not like the new rock music but rock won out in the end. Now, 50 years later, there is a switch happening once again with rock beginning to lose out to techno. Just like previous generations, the old will hold on for dear life and even fight the new sound. I am a rocker at heart but I also see the value that my daughter’s generation places on the new music, so I am trying to embrace it. At age 50, I am creating “worship mix” and learning to DJ using a new handheld technology. Interestingly, the new technology is a small black handheld device that creates electronic music. This is what I saw in my dream that was instrumental in releasing the new Sound from Heaven.

This new sound is already on the earth right now! Imagine the possibilities if Christians and the Church-at-large could embrace this next move of God instead of rejecting it like in the past. I am praying that God will give us “ears that can hear” what the Spirit is saying and doing right now. Oh God, help us to partner with you for one of the greatest revivals in church history!

“Sky blue guitar” anointing… I heard about it long ago. I was told that Elvis and the Beatles refused it, not wanting to serve the Lord. It’s too late in life for me to change course and become a pro musician so I prayed that one of my sons would willingly receive it…and while so praying, I felt a check – I sensed in my spirit, that someone else already had.

    “Who, Lord?”

    “U2”

Mind you, I’m not a U2 partisan, I’m am metalhead, mostly. But I started taking U2’s music a lot more seriously after that. Did anyone else get this?

Meanwhile, eagerly awaiting the next wave…

There has been a hunger in my spirit to hear what’s next in worship. I haven’t heard any of it yet, but I knew it was out there. I’m late to read this article, but it does confirm what I’ve felt in my spirit, that there is a new wave of cutting-edge music out there, just waiting to be released.

I have read with interest this sound from heaven. This has been a subject that has taken grip of my thoughts and inspirations as I try to serve God. I go out entertaining and have found my experience to be much the same as I have introduced music that could be described as secular and yet carries the message of God’s love and power. I believe new things are happening. this evening I was at a churches together meeting where we looked at revival and was particularly led to the Scottish revival in the Island of Lewis what power what a thrill to read of such an outpouring of the Holy Spirit

It would be wonderful if musicians did indeed follow the spirit in creating a ‘new sound’ from heaven that was spirit-inspired, spirit-lead and spirit-filled. But I would sound a word of warning. A new sound from heaven MUST come from heaven and not be a ‘Christianised’ version of secular music styles. I see this trend not only in music (although that is where it is most prevalent) to take the things of the world and put a Christian spin on them and say that they are now ‘Christian’. Unfortunately doing this does not remove the roots. God is more than capable of creatively generating a unique sound that originates entirely from Him and is not a copy of some earthly sound.

Dear Concerned, I hear what you are saying, it is frustrating to see Christian music settling for less. The good news is that no one can fake the true sound from Heaven!

This is awesome. Often I’ve heard echoes of the heavenlies in rock & roll and wondered if God was trying to break through to their hearts, or if the musicians were *almost* hearing what He wanted for them. My old pastor told me, “the world doesn’t know WHOMN to worship, but they know HOW to worship… just go to a rock concert and see!”

The only one I knew who sort-of saw the same thing was Rogan Taylor (a non-Christian AFAIK), author of “The Death and Resurrection Show”, who traces all showbiz to ancient religious origins. What a relief to hear that other Christians sense what I’m sensing!!!

sept 14, last week I asked “Jesus what are u doing?’
He said ” I am painting My new house” “What new house?” I asked “the house of worship” He replied. I then saw large glass doors and what seemed to be walls going all the way to heaven. I started to hear heavy metal guitar strings, with a very background of angelic voices, then some sting instrument from Asia and aslo a whole Vienna orchestra tuning in before playing. More followed a gong from Tibet and an African tam tam and bongo and others. There were levels and depth, fullness and space, it is the best I can describe this. The Lord said, He will be riding this wave as a surfer riding at the upmost crest of an ocean wave. I was asked to pray for the musicians world wide to pick up on those sound waves. A few days later the house must have been done painting, Master cook Jeshua was in the kitcheen baking the cakes for the wedding feast!! COOL Raoul

Several years ago I was praying with some friends for our president, when the Lord interrupted my prayer and began to show me a picture of a dog whistle. He said that there was a sound coming from heaven that would hit the ears and then the hearts of folks and that it would draw them to him. I understood that just like humans can’t hear the pitch of the dog whistle there would be those who couldn’t hear this sound. I knew that those who the sound was intended for would hear it and come to him. I was excited to read the word you released as it reminded me of the word/vision the Lord gave me.

Great word, Doug! There have been a few times when our worship team is playing prophetically that I have heard other instruments or voices that aren’t being played or sung; sometimes it is an electronic other-worldly sound that is really compelling. Sometimes it is just one note held and vibrated in ways that evoke really clear, powerful images. Yesterday my 17-year old daughter had me listen to “Explosions In The Sky”, an instrumental band. It was very powerful, and reminded me of that sound.

BTW- I had a dream about you this week. You and Lance Wallnau were a composite person, and we were having a coffee at Starbucks. You ordered something hot, and they brought it to you in a small plastic cup. I ordered something similar, but a venti, and they brought it to me in 4 little cups. They apologized, but said that all the cups were gone and Starbucks supply wasn’t sending them more, though they didn’t know why. I said to them they should go across the street and buy some Styrofoam cups at the store. They got a look of sudden revelation and every employee went over there to get cups. When they left, some of the customers started manifesting demonically. You and I ended up delivering the customers from various different spirits until the employees returned. Some were ok with it, most were not, and a battle ensued for control of Starbucks.

Should I post that to a different site so that I can pay to have that interpreted?

Doug… this is so right on. I just want to say that one of my passions is the Sounds of Heaven. It was Sound that created the earth, it will be a Sound that will bring the return of Jesus. Without Sound where would the colors be, how could we communicate. Music is everywhere, why is there so much? Because God created Music. Heaven is full of Music and Song. Everything moves to the Sound of Music. Even withing each of us we have a sound, a song that is part of our DNA! The Sound is at a distance but it is coming closer and will impact the earth and change it in ways we may not understand! Ok as you can see I am passionate about this lol! Mindy, Sound is an intricate part of God… whether it is His voice or His Love Song… it moves His heart and it moves mine and many others as well. 🙂 Blessings Doug! 🙂

Love this, Doug! I’m part of a worship/recording ministry, and we would love to know more about any equipment or software that you see as being key to the new sound. Is there any way you can break down the makeup of the music you’re hearing? Are there any particular sounds or samples that stand out? Is it drum-heavy? More ambient? High energy? Does it tend to be more melodic or repetitive? Are there any outstanding instruments? Does it sound airy, or chunky, or fluid, or fiery? Does the instrumentation/programming have a lot of complexity in the time signature and arrangement, or is it fairly straightforward? You mention it “reverberates forever”–do you mean it literally has a lot of reverb or echo effect applied? Is there an emphasis on high, low, or mid-range frequency?

We’ve got a lot of questions, hahaha! I could probably think of more if I had more time right now.

Thing is, we work with a lot of young worship leaders, and we want to do whatever we can to strategically inspire them, in the event that one of them is the next Elvis, John Lennon, or Kurt Cobain =)

Christopher, I am a musician and understand music quite well however, what I heard was advanced so it is not easy to define. It had a high energy techno dance to it. I think the reverberating forever indicated that, like techno, the songs go on and on it the Spirit. God spoke to me 2 years ago about a hand-held DJ mixing device that was going to change music. The Pacemaker is the only one out there right now. There will still be music recorded using all instruments but devices like the Pacemaker will soon be incorporated into live bands and create a crossover of rock/rap/hip hop into a new hybrid of some type of “super-techno” for lack of a better term. With the Pacemaker technology there are no limits to what you can produce. God is limitless! I think the current DJ mixes that are using Pacemaker are not necessarily the New Sound. But it is out there. Like in the experience I had, Christians got ticked at me about the new sound. That is already happening! I am not saying that Pacemaker is the New Sound but watch this technology. I have one and I am working on some worship mix and want to find a live band willing to experiment with it.

I was a talented songwriter/singer as a young adult (I can now say that objectively since I am now an… old adult:) and I loved the Lord. I started a band and we would play at events that “happened” outside the church we attended in France. This was unusual in a society where less than 1% is born again or knows about being born again. Sadly, we were ostracized by the church (and we weren’t the least bit extreme), judged, and fear of man prevented the pastor to endorse the group. We were unjustly criticized. We didn’t pray enough before we played. Then we were too loud or too this. It was hardbreaking. Players left one after the other under the pressure. I was never angry or even hurt over this (God’s grace, ’cause I realize now I should have reacted and stood my ground) but I can feel Jesus tears over the people we could have reached at concerts that had no Christians in their lives (we don’t have a church at each street corner in France and the steepled buildings house 10-15 gray haired people at best on a Sunday morning. I will always encourage talent, excellence, difference when the message is right! I will always bless the Lord’s work and the Lord’s giftings! I am hoping my 6-year old son is picking up the gift. My two grown daughters had no interest in music. I liked so much the I-pod selections you played in Victoria, Doug! Yes, God speaks through secular songs. Whenever I am hearing “you are so beautiful… to me… can’t you see?” I hear my daddy’s voice. It’s time we recognize God speaks all the time, to all flesh (saved or not) and they are not stupid to the point they can’t recognize a good thing, an anointed thing (lyric or music) and commercialize it. It really is God through them! Let’s honor it!

Mindy, try assigning positive intent and “believing the best.” Love believes the best! I know Doug, I know his heart, I know his motives, I’ve watched him closely(and learned!)for many years, so perhaps you’ll take my word for it that what you think you read is not at all what he said. 🙂 If not, well, bless your heart!
I actually got on to say how much I enjoyed this post and how powerfully it connected with me, and confirms much of what I’ve been hearing as well. 🙂 Thanks for sharing, Doug.

I preached recently on “Yellow” by Coldplay – “I drew a line for you” is such a powerful lyric. Also preached on the new Star Trek film and a while ago we had a whole season watching bits of “Take the Lead” and allowing God to speak to us through it. We sometimes show clips from things like The OC to illustrate points. There is so much being caught by people who don’t know that they know stuff. I’m with you Doug! Jesus used contemporary things which mattered to people to connect with them when He spoke.

A.W.E.S.O.M.E.!!! God is bringing change…by His power! I am so thankful He is doing this!!! For so long, so many have prayed without seeing their answer; but we get to LIVE the answer and ride the wave of generations of prayers and prophecies! We get to usher in something that will be a gift to the next generation, so it is entirely worth the misunderstanding! God is full of love for all! Praying you are empowered and encouraged to the fullest in your innermost being! May you be filled with strength and unwavering faith! 🙂

Doug! This encouraged me so much today! Everything about what you wrote made perfect sense to my spirit, because you are prophesying about something I (and many others) am a part of. It’s true that the sound is already here…and we must pray for it to be received! The timing of its release is soon! Please be encouraged that you are truly hearing from God, and that both the date of your writing and the verse you quoted hold more meaning than you currently know! So does the part about worshiping God through the lyrics of secular songs! A seed has already been sown, and the day to pray for it to be received is TODAY! That’s all I can share right now, but I just want you to be freed to fully embrace everything you shared without a doubt in your mind! Take joy in what God has revealed to you! It is already coming to pass, but we must pray!

    Doug,
I’m so glad that you posted this article. Our youngest son, Jason – age 19, has been teaching me about the music styles that are popular with his generation, especially heavy metal. I’ve had a hard time getting past the sound of the music itself to listen closely to the lyrics. (I didn’t like metal when it was new the first time, when I was Jason’s age!).

So many of the groups Jason listens to are asking spiritual questions and voicing their frustration at not getting spiritual answers that truly impact their lives for the good. Young adults have, historically, had a very keen nose for sniffing out hypocrisy and lack of true understanding from those who are older and set in their ways.

I’ve long believed that many of the musicians of my youth (1960s & 1970s) were born with strong gifts for worshiping God. But the Church was so busy accusing and rejecting them because the younger didn’t sound like the elder, that those influential musical artists were corrupted and turned away from the one true God.

What might the Beatles, Janis Joplin, Jimmy Hendrix and the like have accomplished on the earth if the Church had chosen to set aside their personal preferences and fervently prayed for each of those artists to encounter Jesus in very personal ways? Sadly, we’ll never know. But may those of us from the Woodstock Generation not repeat the legalistic mistakes of our parents!

Mindy, I know the Holy Spirit and God alone brings revival. My experience has been that certain types of music can help people connect with God. Oh well, let’s agree to disagree.

    Doug,

I sincerely thank you for your response. I am not missing your heart for seeing people come to Jesus. I do recognize that you talk many times in your article about revival and the excitement of people coming to know the Lord. I am simply saying that any revival that occurs will be and always has been fueled by the Holy Spirit, not by any new style of music. He may choose to use music to reach certain people or He may choose to use another means, but the point is that when we elevate music to the place where we claim that it alone is doing the reviving of hearts, we are dangerously close to proclaiming the music as god, instead of proclaiming God as God, as I’m sure you want to do.

Wow That is so awesome! I receive this, I sing and I am currently learning the piano. My husband also plays the guitar. I have been praying and asking God what is the new sound from heaven that has yet to be released on the earth. This encourages me to press in and continue to worship God.
    thanks for sharing!!!

You are right that God is in the business of saving souls. You are speaking falsely when you say that, “Music sets the pace for everything.” Music is not god. God is God and He is the One who sets the pace for everything. He can choose to use music to draw certain people or a friendship or a sermon or a situation in life, but He is not restricted to just using music to reach out to the new generation.

Music is a wonderful gift from God and I am so thankful for the creativity that God has given to those who love Him as they make music that glorifies and honors Him. However, when you say that, “after we leave the church service, we can hear these songs play and immediately be able to worship God” you are saying that your being able to worship God is dependent upon the style of music you are hearing. I understand that you are saying if you hear one of these more secular tunes, you think of the “Christian” lyrics and are then worshiping God. Worship is more than lyrics! Worship is a lifestyle.

Mindy – you are missing my heart for people and for Jesus. I dont think music is a god. Wish you knew my motives are not bad. Hope you can catch the fact that I love God and people and want to see them come to Jesus! Thanks so much!

What you have shared here is so encouraging, affirming and confirming! My Yamaha keyboard is due to arrive tomorrow via UPS, and God has been having me listen to many utube (non-christian) music videos for a while now and showing me how He ‘speaks’ through the lyrics (there are so many examples it’s almost uncanny) – we just have to have ‘ears to hear’! Thank you so much for sharing these amazing insights, Doug! 🙂

I was inspired by the “Sons of Thunder” word from the time it came out in the 80’s, subscribed to the “Beatle’s anointing”, and kept my eyes open for the sky blue guitar that would bring forth the new worship sound!
