God’s Creative Spirit: How To Transform Your Words Into Spirit

Motivational BackgroundGod’s Creative Spirit: How To Transform Your Words Into Spirit

Doug Addison

We have all experienced the difference between words and Spirit-filled words. Words are just things we hear and eventually forget. Spirit-filled words are words that transform us and we are never the same again.

Want to know how God taught me to shift my words from just being words to powerful, life-transforming Spirit? It’s not what you think. Hint: it has to do with creativity.

Rewind my story
Let’s rewind back to the 1980’s. I had a very small amount of exposure to public speaking. I spoke at a few business training seminars on technology for a company I worked for at the time. I was also given the opportunity to occasionally teach a class at my church.  At first, I tried to be like other speakers with perfect notes, quotes and clearly outlined points.

One day a friend and mentor of mine encouraged me to “just be me” when I spoke publicly. He told me that if I would simply let my passion for the subject come out, be spontaneously funny, and learn to connect with my audience, I would someday be a very successful speaker.

Where deep fulfillment began
At first I did not understand what he was saying, but I took his advice and began to practice.  I was amazed at the response that I got from people. I found that I have a knack for making things simple, easy to understand and practical. When I spoke this way, it gave people hope that they can do it too. I crossed over from training people with theory, facts, and head-knowledge to imparting life-giving insight and stories that created new hope. I began to experience a deep level of personal fulfillment through writing and public speaking because I had found a way to contribute, making the world a better place by restoring hope and life to people.

It was not just my speaking style or the words I chose that made me a successful public speaker, although that helped. I felt as though God’s creative Spirit was flowing through me as I spoke. I seemed to know what each crowd needed and I tailored my talks to make the most impact. I noticed that when I went back to speaking from notes and points, there was not as much impact. In fact, those were often the most disastrous talks I have ever done.

My big revelation
A big key in my revelation: being creative allows words to be transformed into Spirit. And it is the Holy Spirit that transforms lives. Wow, was that a deep realization. As a public speaker, most of the training I received was on how to study, write and present material. But I had not been told that if I actually “lived” what I was talking about and got passionate about it, and if I could find ways to be funny and down to earth, then God would actually turn words into life.

Your creative flow
Allowing God’s creative Spirit to come through my personal style while speaking brings live-giving, spiritual transformation for my listeners. Think about this:

·      What is one way you feel God’s Holy Spirit flowing through you?

·      Where do you have the freedom to express yourself while feeling God flowing through you?

Watch for moments when God is creatively touching something you are passionate about. Pursue these times, enjoy the moment and become familiar, like I did, with how God’s creative Spirit works. Do not be afraid if you feel like God’s creative Spirit is moving through you in an out-of-the-box way. You are completely unique, so God’s way of moving in your life may not look like anyone else’s. And that is a good thing!

Flowing with God’s creative Spirit
Now I speak in front of tens of thousands of people each year. I make people laugh and help awaken them to the possibilities of transforming their lives, empowering them to be all that they were created to be. I mix my talks with stand-up comedy routines, real life stories, practical exercises and surprisingly applicable music. I am convinced that music has a major impact on people. So in the middle of a talk I play songs such as “I Got a Feeling”, “Don’t Worry Be Happy” and “I Can See Clearly Now.” It is amazing what happens as a result!

Doug, you can appreciate this for a few reasons, on different levels, but on this date, Oct 23rd I was the guess speaker on my 1st Christian program. I was invited to be on the show StraightLine with Dan Rogers, on WLMB TV40 as an expert in addictions and counseling. Plus after the show I asked they wanted me to come back. The President and CEO of the station said, “they only thing better than being a guess on one 30 min show is to be the guess on two 30 min shows.” The lyrics to the song “I can see clearly now” was given to me (a Seer too, like you) during ministry time as part of my training/equipping for Healing and Deliverance ministry.
You know I love and honor you man of God; and I know we are connected for God’s Glory and you have imparted so much to me, and God has used you to help change me forever.

    Peace and Blessings

That’s so awesome, Doug! I have heard you speak but I don’t think you used music when I heard you. But I love hearing that you use non-“churchy” songs.

I lead worship sometimes at street outreach events, and when I do, I often play “Have I Told You Lately.” It freaks people out because they know it’s coming from a church band, but it sooo touches people’s hearts and spirits. Just a dash of the unexpected, but the Holy Spirit uses it! 🙂

This year God has really been working on teaching me to function in every situation as my true self that he created.

It has been an eye opener and a revelation, as you see how much easier it is to function how God comes into a situation and does what you know you could never do and how similar situations in the past was hard work, it is now easy, as long as I stay and function out of my true identity, and I believe it is key to our future and the season God is releasing us into.

    God Bless
