3 Ways to Break Through and Change Your Current Situation

I originally released this blog post in 2009, but felt that it is significant for many people right now in August 2015.

On 09/09/09, I had a life-changing encounter with God.

The presence of God came into my house and I was overwhelmed for over an hour with God’s euphoric love and joy. During the experience I received revelation about ministry and financial breakthrough that God wants to do in people’s lives right now.

Many of us have prophetic promises from God about operating at a higher level of ministry, but are currently in a job or situation that they have little passion for. There are also people who need a financial breakthrough that will free them to do all that God is calling them to do.

God spoke to me that a key for this breakthrough lies within your current situation.

My breakthrough
In 1988, God began speaking to me about being in full time ministry. A few years later I got serious about pursuing ministry training; but the problem was that I still needed to work my full time job because I needed to make a living.

I started doing self-study courses and volunteered what little free time I had at ministries that were doing what I felt called to. It seemed like I would never have the door open for me to serve God with the freedom I wanted, and have the money to get the training I needed.

Then God showed me that I needed to stop living my life thinking about how it will be in the future, to begin enjoying the present and be grateful each day for the job I had at the time.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Colossians 3:23-24 NIV

When I started working at my job as if I were working for God, everything began to change. In 1993, I was working in San Francisco at the time, and my boss and coworkers were not Christian. In fact, most people were hostile towards Christians in the workplace.

In spite of that, I decided to use my God-given spiritual gifts to help people at work, instead of complaining to God over my feelings about being stuck. I started praying and interceding for the company I worked for, and we started seeing dramatic positive results.

I would sometimes get words of knowledge and share them as “ideas I got while praying”, and the owner began to attribute my prayers with the company’s success.

As a result, I received bonuses, and a couple years later when I approached them about transitioning from my corporate job into ministry, they helped us by keeping me on part time. Eventually they hired me back as a contractor for five times the pay!

This extraordinary favor allowed me to transition into full-time ministry, and provided funding to plant our first church. God opened those doors, but it was a result of me changing my attitude towards my situation.

Change your situation
This is a prophetic word to many people right now:

God wants to use your current situation to bless you and release finances and favor into your life. The key is to learn to be content and work at whatever it is you are doing as if you are working for God Himself. Not only does this pertain to jobs, but also to school, certain relationships, and even other situations you may feel stuck in.

We can do incredible things through God’s strength. Since God’s love and power are limitless, what we can accomplish through Him has no limits as well. If we are complaining, anxious, and worrying about our current situation, it can create limits to what we can do. Allowing God’s love to flow through us, being content, and having gratitude can change the spiritual atmosphere around us. A good attitude creates an environment in which blessings are drawn to us.

I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:12-13 NIV

If you feel frustrated or stuck, begin to find the good things in your life right now.

Here are a few tips on how to change your current situation:

  1. Give thanks for what God has already done for you. Make a list of blessings and things you are grateful for.
  2. Think about the positive things you like about the people in your life. If you are married, what are the things that originally drew you together? Learn to recognize and help draw attention to the good things in other people.
  3. Find someone you can help or encourage today. Ask God to help you think of a way to help someone else in a practical way.

    Wow, I just stumbled upon this article, and it is exactly what I was seeking today (and all year)! I even prayed this morning that God would give me some sort of breakthrough and more inspiration to make today awesome, reading this is quite on that track!

    My story is similar to yours, I have a good full time job in my career (decided to take the responsible route after college), though I feel trapped, unfulfilled, and that I’m slowly losing the joy and inspiration I am normally filled with. I have bigger callings, to start my own company and inspire others…I’ve been starting my own freelance company on the side in hopes that I can quit and have more mobility/freedom, but who knows how it will all work out. I know I won’t be in this funny in-between phase forever, but I sometimes feel discouraged – and wish that I could just be set free from my current job and get on to the inspiring stuff. (I also have a relationship that almost mirrors this and I can’t tell what God wants me to do about it…but that’s another story)

    I would usually consider myself an extremely grateful person, but MAN, I’ve got to step it up a notch right now! I know I have so much to be thankful for in my job, the experience I’m getting, saving money, the co-workers I’m growing to love more and more – but I need to embrace that even MORE – wholeheartedly serve God through it all! Pray for my co-workers and inspire them with God’s loving presence every day – I can tell they’re yearning for more deep down. I really believe that beautiful changes will be made in my life as I follow the Lord, I just have to let it soak in and LIVE it out.

    So, thank you, I’m working for God now. Above all, that is my true calling. Life is pretty exciting. 🙂

    Dear Doug
    this was just for me. Thank you very much. It is a conformation to me for wath im going trou.I had to live my jop as a daymother and hav now a amont less incomen ieach month. Even it`s needs me to lock for e new jop everything i dryed was nothing. But in my hard i know the Lord is prepearing a breackthrouh in finances. Becaus i saw the new car in heaven, even we havent the amount for it Jet. But i will be thankful wath the Lord is laying me every day bevor my feet. Thanks god. Thank you Doug.

    This is wisdom. I wonder too if it would do us well to not focus too much on the blessings and benefits in this world, just trust the rewards being stored up in Heaven. Learning to Live in the moment and remember that this world is not our home…

    You have NO idea how much I needed this. The first of this year the Lord told me something about my FUTURE that I have basically obsessed over every day. When praying about it, He reminds me that this promise is about my future and everything you wrote here wraps up everything else He has told me I need to do until it comes to pass. God is responsible (faithful) to fulfill His promises and I am responsible to rest (trust) in Him. Thank you, Father God, for confirmation.

    Thank you for this very on tome accurate deep confirmation. We are currently in exactly the same situation which you described here. Confirmation includes the very words the Spirit of God spoke with me as well as the same scripture. Both my husband and I are stuck in very difficult situation BUT so much to praise Him for. After reading this precious word I am even more eager to change my attitude and even more , to use this to reach souls at the very place we are right now while heading toward the destiny He prepared for us. Living in the future, robs us from bring effective in the present. Thank you Doug. Thank you Lord for this confirmation.

    Hi Doug,
    I want to thank you for the word you sent. In the mornings I started saying God what is my strategy for the today. I was reading your letter and had to stop in the part about attitude and do your work as unto the Lord. The Lord showed me in my spirit I said I have judged people at work. I work with drug addiction people. I quickly repented and began to weep uncontrollably. Then I said Lord where have I been judged by my own words again I cried uncontrollably I would stop crying then couple of minutes later I was weeping again and again until I felt so clean inside.
    I want to thank you for responding so quickly to the pick your brain I came out in far better shape and feel incredible totally peaceful inside.
    Thank You from my heart. Emotionally inside my hunger pangs seem to be very non existent

    Blessings friend!
    Yes and Amen. This is almost entirely where I’m at in my current situation with work. First job ever that I didn’t look for but it “landed” on me. No experience, only exposure from my mother having lived in a facility where I now am employed.
    A lot of undue stress in the expectations of a PCA working the skeletal night crew in a local assisted living with memory care facility. No HR dept. so stress is high and friction is constant daily between staff and residents, nurses over burdened with responsibilities outside their callings. Tempers flare, feelings get hurt, mgmt makes one sided hasty decisions, and add control and manipulation into the formula.
    I’ve been there 10 months and my eyes have been opened to the things to pray for and in. Giving God the thanks and Glory working through things, and persecution is high.
    Much change is needed and patterns of hiring and training need to be refined and made consistent. The residents need Love and care more than hard pressed procedures and rules and I believe there is a resolution to this! God has a purpose!! Praying ears to hear truth and teachable spirits amongst Co workers management and directors of all assisted living, group home, and memory care units across the USA as our elderly become aged and needing help in daily living. Supernatural increase of finances to provide quality care and benefits to CNAs, PCAs, TMAs, and LPNs who sit lower on the pole doing hard labor, unrecognized and largely unappreciated for cares given.
    Shalom peace be with us all as we trust in His Word and promises as we Stand firm in the Faith, boasting in the Lord.

    I am sitting here drinking my coffee and opened my email. This message is intended for me! What a wonderful Father and Friend I have in God! Even though it seems that I have everything together on the outside, my inner peace is little. The feeling of being pulled away from God is truly terrible. Now I realize that He was never actually looking away from me, but rather putting the pieces together with me. Thanks to Jesus Christ!!     Thank you for this insight. Although I’m mainly a grateful person, it does ring true to be remember what God has brought us through…and that being content is key to being able to be used by God and get through to the next level sooner than later!
