3 Simple Ways To Position Yourself for Hearing God

Young woman listening to the music .

Want to jumpstart your ability to hear God?

One of the questions I hear most often from people is, “How do you hear God so clearly?”

Since I release Daily Prophetic Words online, I write prophetic blogs weekly and monthly and even publish a yearly Prophetic Forecast book, people tell me that the things that God gives me seem to match what is happening in their lives.

Yes, I have developed my prophetic gifts over the years. But I started hearing God more consistently when I started to do a few simple things that God showed me. The key is being consistent.

Here are 3 simple steps to hearing God better:

1. Practice

If you want to hear God clearly in your life it will take practice. Do not be afraid to make a mistake. In fact, God will use our mess-ups to help sharpen us. Spiritual gifts are not given to us in a mature state. The more we use them, and the more training we seek out, the better we will understand and the clearer things become.

“But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.” Hebrews 5:14 NIV

Some people spend more time and energy on their hobbies, sports or cars than they do taking time to listen to God.

When you pray, do not do all the talking! Balance it out with taking time to listen. God most often speaks in the stillness within us and we need to slow down to hear Him.

[Tweet “When you pray, do not do all the talking! Balance it out with taking time to listen.”]

2. Clear the clutter

I know we are all busy, and adding one more thing to your day might not be what you want to do. So it will help if you find the best time that works for your life. It really is not necessary to spend long extended times listening to God.

I find that no matter how busy I am, taking time to listen to the voice of God—even for a few minutes—helps me gain focus for my day. Sometimes He speaks through reading the Bible or maybe it will be a song on the radio or a message on a billboard.

“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.” Mark 1:35 NIV

Take a few minutes each day and ask God what it is you need for today.

3. Write it down

When I tell people that I journal 365 days a year they look at me strangely—like I am from another planet.

First of all, when I even say the word journaling I get a lot of negative reactions. Because most people equate journaling with “Dear Diary” or “getting your emotions out there.”

But when it comes to hearing God, there is no better way to start understanding it than by writing down what you are hearing.

Sadly, journaling seems to leave a bad taste in people’s mouths. I hear, “Oh, I am not the journaling type.”

But not writing things down is blocking many people from receiving the most valuable advice I can give them when it comes to hearing God.

There is something about placing a value on God’s words to us.

“Blessed are those who listen to me, watching daily at my doors, waiting at my doorway.” Proverbs 8:34 NIV

I do not journal in the way that most people do. A few years ago, I began spending time writing down things I heard God saying. It is not all that formal and often I do it in bullet points.

It was when I started to journal that opened up an amazing world to me that allows me to see things in a times and seasons fashion. My ability to hear God not only increased when I started journaling, but I have also developed my ability to understand, and gain wisdom and timing. So, if you want to hear God more clearly for the coming season, practicing these 3 simple steps consistently will position you to receive more.

Get ready to cross over into a new season of hearing God’s voice!

Blessings,

Doug-sig

Everything you said about journaling, seasons billboards etc I experience. It Is a supernatural experience in itself. Most of the time my Father will keep me there no less than an hour. And I Love it and want to stay there. But I feel in under mental attack by Satan every minute To the point I can’t concentrate. Please pray

I have been hearing the door bell of my house ring so clearly. That was last month, (June, 2016). It was during the very early morning hours of 2-4 a.m. then last friday evening I was in my bedroom asleep, it was around 8 or 9 p.m. I heard the door bell ring, but it was kind of like a muffled sound. So, aI got up and I went to the front room, and there was no body there. As I went back to my room, I asked God, Lord, what does all this mean? I thanked Him for the answers that are coming. In Jesus Name Amen.

Thanks Doug. I have come to see that God so often places a strand in the sand. A loose end sticking out that is SO subtle. The temptation is to pass it by or see it just as another piece of grass in the dune. We can too easily miss or dismiss what is waiting here on offer!
By remaining sensitive to the slight differences of this lead i must stop and look more closely and listen with a curiosity at the whisper of its suggestion. We must bother to bend down, take it up in our hands and begin to pull and follow. Soon enough we find ourselves pulling a cord and following it with a growing heart of adventure. When the cord eventually stops we start to dig and unearth treasures so profound and rich which release an anointing for now. The reward begins in us initially and overflows to abundantly bless those around us. If we would have blinked we might too easily if missed it.
Or by laughing off too easily the strand in the sand we would have continued walking right over that buried treasure and never known it was there. Perhaps we are doing that every day and missing what God has “in store”.
I am coming to see that the Lord is looking for passionate treasure hunters who are on guard and ready to slow down to His pace in order to become richly rewarded from the secret places of his daily treasures

I completely agree with what you are saying! I am cat sitting for an old boyfriend and his new wife. When I was there yesterday, I was overwhelmed with sadness as I saw pictures them hanging on the wall. I cried out to God in my grief. I prayed that I would rather be loved by God than by someone who didn’t love me. As I drove home, tears were rolling down my face and yet I was thanking God for saving me from that relationship. The sun was setting over the ocean and the clouds formed up with two eye shaped openings of sunlight shining through and seemingly over me. It was as if God was saying “I see you”. It was His way of letting me know He hears me. I was so blessed. When I got home I listened to John Gray’s World. He spoke about Faithing your Fears…the Rolling Stones of life were rolling away to make room for new life. Confirmation! I wrote it all down to document my state of mind and how God revealed Himself to me. I do think it’s important to write it down to remind ourselves of events and it’s amazing how many there are over time.
