Why It’s Important to Remember Your First Love

Feel like you’ve fallen out of touch with God and His purposes for you?

As we go throughout our lives, we get busy. We have family members who have needs, a job to work, homes to tend to, etc.

Sometimes we get so busy that time passes us by. Then, before we know it, we wake up one morning and wonder, “How did I end up here?”

Even when we get busy and begin feeling distracted, God has simple reminders for us to get back on track.

God always leads with the good

In the book of Revelation, God writes letters to several churches in order to give them instructions to get back on track. For the people of Ephesus, He had many praises!

You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. Revelation 2:3 NIV

Isn’t it wonderful that God led his instructions with the good things the people in this church were doing? These people were working hard and had gone through many hardships — just like many of us!

God knows exactly what we’re going through and wants to encourage us. The Lord is such a good Father who knows how to interact with His children, and He does so in a way that brings joy and peace, not harsh judgement.

God’s priority is our relationship with Him

God did share one complaint with the people of Ephesus:

But I have this complaint against you. You don’t love me or each other as you did at first! Revelation 2: 4 NLT

Wow. Even though the people of Ephesus were doing a lot of good things, they had forgotten the most important part — to love God and others as we love ourself.

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.  Mark 12:30-31 NIV

It’s never too late to encounter God again

The people of Ephesus had forgotten their first love. They had forgotten the God who promises to be a refuge for us in times of trouble.

The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. Deuteronomy 33:27 NIV

God is always waiting for you with open arms. He wants to encounter you — and for you to encounter Him — in a way that is real and tangible.

Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always. 1 Chronicles 16:11 NIV

Fall in love with God all over again

The good news is, this instruction from the Lord to get back on track is easy! All we have to do is take a deep breath, slow down a bit and remember our first love — our amazing God and those around us.

Ask God to lead you into a fresh encounter with Him today. Watch as He blows your mind with His love and presence!

Blessings!

    A song of wonder
    A song of praise
    A song of everlasting grace
    An outburst of My Spirit
    in outer space

    Come to Me My darling,
come to embrace Me in My power
    and Might
    Stay for the Hour,
    in pure delight

    Oh My darling,
    Oh My Bride,
    seek My Glory,
    not your pride
Come and let Me fill you,
    seek Me through the night,
    embrace My Holy power
and let it all be turned to light

    For your Heavenly Father,
    loves you dearly and desires,
to hold you to His chest
Seek Him so you can see ever so clearly,
the anointing is on His breast

    Stay tuned in uprighteousness
and let Me fill you with My power
    Hope is not in vain,
    but has an everlasting shower
of sprinkled water that will start to rain

Do you hear Me, oh My precious,
shout out in joy and pure delight,
for I will give you pure stones and honey,
My secrets are no longer for hide

Follow Me where ever I go,
    seek Me where I AM
I am there to comfort you,
those who are weary and slain,
    I will strengthen you,
it is all not for vain

Clap your hands and stamp your feet,
for now is the time for Glory
    Heaven is about to burst,
on His time there unfolds a story
and you will be the first

Pray let Your will be done,
    say yes and in honour,
    for there is a time,
    that will be gone

I love this post! I drifted away from God after a tragedy in my life. That verse Deuteronomy 33:27 – ‘The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms’ has been instrumental in my healing. My time with God each morning is my favorite place to be. His presence is so vivid. I am like a child asking endless questions. He has patiently answered them all. God bless you Doug- you reflect His compassion.

Indeed our greatest need is to fall in love with Him again and again.
It is to seek His face more than His hands. He is the blessing.
It is to be contend with just JESUS.
