Let Go of the Old to Embrace the New

Does it seem like the stuff that used to work for you doesn’t anymore?

If you’ve ever tried to lose weight, you may know what plateaus are. It’s when your body stops responding to what was working before. Health and fitness coaches will tell you to switch up your routine to “shock” your system so you can keep getting results. 

Or maybe you’ve outgrown your “shell.” There are certain animals that have to leave their old shell when they’ve outgrown it in order to find a bigger one.

Do you feel like you need room to grow?

You may feel like you’re in this place right now. Sometimes the old ways of thinking, believing and doing stop working. This is true spiritually, too. 

You may reach a plateau in your spiritual life and need something to give you a jump-start. Or you simply need more room to grow—the old ways that used to “fit” you no longer do the job. 

I’ve got good news for you … this isn’t a bad place to be! You’re just in the middle of a transition period. The question is: How should you react to times of transition?

The purpose of transition

Spiritual transition can be an awkward, but sometimes necessary, place to be. It’s that place between the old and the new. The new hasn’t come yet, but you’ve outgrown the old. You know you’re meant for more but aren’t sure what “more” looks like. That’s transition.

Here’s an example from my own life. 

Recently, InLight Connection, my ministry, has been going through some major change. Following what God is calling us to in the new season has required us to drastically reduce the number of paid online workshops we host, and it’s cost us a lot financially to do so! 

We are having to rely, more than ever, on God and His goodness. Transition is a great place to learn how to trust the Lord and His good plans for us.

You have to let go of the old to embrace the new!

Try to imagine that you have your hands full of stuff. The stuff in your hands was good, but now it’s old and outdated. 

Now think about God coming to you, holding your dreams in His hand. He says, “Hey, I’ve got what you’ve been asking for. Can you let go of that old stuff so I can give the new to you?”

But the old was good to you! It probably even means a lot to you emotionally. You may be sad to let it go. 

When you decide to let go of the old in your hands, there’s a short time period when your hands are empty. That is the point of transition between what you were holding and what you’re about to hold. 

Transition may feel uncomfortable—but it’s worth it!

Transition can make you feel nervous, and it may even be uncomfortable for you. But God is standing right there with His arms full of the new and He’s ready to give it to you! He’s just waiting for you to release the old. 

You can trust that God knows what He’s doing and has your best interests at heart. The old season has passed, and you can be sure that the new will be better—even while you’re in transition.

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us. Ephesians 3:20 NIV

God’s got His power at work within you, and the good stuff is on its way!

    This season of transition has been brutal and lonely and uncertain. Feeling disconnect in so many ways. When I sensed the change coming God said Trust Me. The words in this blog confirm what is taking place. Question…how long can transition take? Will this workshop really help in this season? Thanks for any insight. Blessings!

    This is so me right now! I’m in a major transition from one home to another including one city to another. I’ve been looking for a new place to live for over 3 months & have physically been out of my old apt for the last 3 almost 4 weeks. During this time I’ve been living in a motel room with 2 service cats only through the grace of God & the generous blessings of friends & family!
    I receive section 8 housing assistance & the challenge has been to find a landlord who’ll accept my housing assistance & will work with me due to some credit issues after being defrauded in July & an old eviction from 5 1/2 years ago that was due to a roommate moving out without warning & I was unable to keep the apartment at that time. I also didn’t have the housing assistance back then. This time after living in the same place for the last 4 years, my landlord decided to give me a 90 day notice that he wasn’t going to renew my lease.

    So I’ve prayed about where I was to go, & I ended up relocating to Redding California to be closer to my home church Bethel church which is where I know God wants me in this new season.

    My dilemma is do I keep the housing assistance voucher & continue to try to find a landlord who’ll work with me or do I give it up & find someone who’ll rent a room to me? Since Bethel has so many school of ministry students every year from all over the world many of the Bethel community rent out rooms to students or others who come to Redding for Bethel. I really could use some Clearity on this as I don’t want to be holding onto anything from the old season so my hands are totally free to receive what God has for me in this new season! What I’m trying to sort out with God is if I’m trying to drag something from the old season (the housing Assistance) into this new season? Or if that’s something God is saying is ok to hold onto & He’s going to open a door for a new place with the right landlord who’ll work with me in spite of the credit issues & old eviction?

    Just this morning I was talking to my husband about releasing old friends to the Lord. Friends that we thought they were friends . Every time God shows or chooses me to lead a program Friends wants to help always end up with competition or jealousy . I just thought is the right thing to do. But end up I’m either confronting them but they will deny it. Old past will keep on rising so I decided to release them to God letting go and Let God. I believe God has good plans for me and allowing Him to choose if necessary who would help if needed.

    Yep That’s where I am. Transition, ? Seems like everything, health, finances, relationships, business, Added legal matters, is under intense pressure. Can’t move forward until God opens the door, and there is only greater loss if I were to go back. The perfect storm! The devil is trying to wear down our/ my endurance. Endure to the end. God has my attention, but my flesh is weak. I decree I shall receive the end of my faith. Manifestation of God’s promises. VICTORY IN ALL THESE AREAS ! I decree the same Victory that concerns this ministry and all it’s staff personal, & associates that are experiencing the same baptism of pressure. I Jesus’s Name,

    I was told I was in transition however the things I went through was so hard I got really hurt. I know it’s wrong but it’s so hard to get out of. I’ve prayed. Asked forgiveness. I prayed prayer with Katie Suza. Still no relief. Sometimes I think it’s never going to end

    Wow Doug. I always thought that holding onto and looking back at the old meant the way I used to live and the things I did, but God just showed me that the thing I am holding on to is how it was for Mr when I first found the Lord and how I long for those times again. I need to let go of that and look forward to the things He’s going to be doing with me now. The new is going to be way better than the old or the beginning. Hallelujah Praise Him!!!

    Hi Doug, Una here from South Africa. This word is definitely meant for me and my husband. It fits us to the T. This last 3 years was and is far from easy. Looks its been a while where I felt like we must cross over to the next level of “maturity”, but we can’t seem to get there. Hope you understand what I meen. I’m sure there are people who feel the same.

    Hi there! This word was right on time for me. I believe the Lord has a higher calling my life something I’ve learned to not even talk about with others.

    Sometimes its difficult to let go of the past when you are not the one holding on to it. Like siblings who refuse to let go of you and not happy with your lifestyle with God. And deep down you know its time to go separate ways. You are with them in flesh but in spirit are no longer there but feel stuck.
