I want to be the first to say "I'm Sorry!" Because this is not how people who represent Jesus are supposed to be. But, there is hope! You don't have to stay in the place of feeling rejected. In fact, your experience can be what launches you forward as a "wounded healer" to love others who have been judged and rejected by Toxic Christianity!

Many People Have Been Wounded By The Church!

I quickly found that #1 question people had was not about God’s existence, but about God’s people.

Nearly everyone my team and I encountered on the streets actually believed in God to some degree.

However, most all of them could not understand why most of the Christians they knew were unloving or judgmental toward them. For some, this included even their closest family members.

As an outreach specialist, I was trained in Apologetics decades ago (in which I knew how to give an answer to those who are asking if God is real).

But my “apologetics” quickly turned to “apologizing” and asking forgiveness from people everywhere on behalf of their negative experiences with Christians. My group and I would then give them prophetic words and interpret their dreams and tattoos to show them that God indeed loves them.

I'm telling you this because I want you to know...

You Are Not Alone! Even People Inside of the Church Are Hurting...

In speaking at church services, conferences and leading outreaches, I started noticing a pattern that there are many people even inside of a church who have been wounded as well.

Many have ran away from the church because they felt a disconnect between the message and the lives of the people who preached the message. Instead of feeling accepted like Jesus made people feel, they felt rejected.

If you can relate, don’t blame yourself.

"Toxic Christianity" Is The Real Problem.

I am not anti-church or being judgmental when I say this. But I do want to take an honest, objective look at the condition of things with how people view us as Christians.

Toxic Christianity is a condition when people have allowed their beliefs (toxic beliefs) to reject people in the name of God. This happens when we lose track of the fact that loving people is the greatest commandment Jesus gave.

It is also when we have allowed spiritual pride to elevate ourselves above others whom we do not agree with theologically or politically.

It's A "We Are Right, You Are Wrong" Mentality.

The “I'm right, you're wrong” mentality pushes people away from God instead of drawing them near. Our own beliefs can blind us so much so that even when God is “doing a new thing,” we are in danger of missing it.

"If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing." 1 Corinthians 13:2 NIV

Once I had recognized this toxic Christianity and realized that I was also judging the people who had hurt me, therefore letting bitterness grow up and choke my life, I knew I had to change as well.

I Had To Change My View Against Those Who Had Hurt Me!

The self-pity I felt wasn’t what I wanted to feel all of my life…

So I started forgiving the people that hurt me and going back to the basics of who God is and who His church is.

Because of this, God healed me from my bad experiences and my views of him that were toxic as well.

Now, I get to be what I call a “wounded healer”…

This is where I get to love the people, like me, who have felt rejected or hurt in some way by toxic Christianity.

There are people in need of God’s love all around us. We carry the light and love of the Lord and have our work cut out for us to begin healing the wounds of literally billions of people who have been wounded by toxic Christianity.
