Spirit of the Lord and Spirit of Wisdom

In this special excerpt, Sean Smith challenges us to get wisdom by asking God how He feels … and more!

Below are some notes from our Partners-only Monthly Mentoring Session. These sessions have been recorded and you can access them by becoming a Partner today! Find out more at DougAddison.com/TimeOff.

Sean Smith started the session by talking about the sevenfold expressions of God, and by highlighting Isaiah 11, which says, “the Spirit of the Lord will rest upon him.”

The word “Lord” in that verse is Adonai. It means owner, master, ruler, commander or controller. Each of these definitions are passageways and secrets to go into deeper intimacy with Holy Spirit.

You begin with allowing God to be ruler. If you want to develop intimacy with Holy Spirit, you allow God to be the controller, owner and master.

When the Bible says, “the Spirit of the Lord rests upon me,” the phrase “upon me” refers to a personal relationship. It also includes the manifest presence of God.

So, what we want to do is develop intimacy with Holy Spirit.

Recently, Sean experienced some worship where the Spirit of God was very strong. He got on his knees and began to weep. He couldn’t tell you why, but he just felt the presence of God … and he knew he needed that.

Sean said that in order to develop intimacy with Holy Spirit, He has to have the final say … not what you’re feeling, not what’s currently trending, not what everyone’s talking about or any modern narrative.

Continuing with the theme, Sean highlighted the Spirit of wisdom. The Bible has so many great promises for wisdom, and it says that God gives wisdom generously (James 1:5).

Are we taking God up on His offer of wisdom?

Sean mentioned that a good habit is to turn Scripture into petition. Wisdom isn’t just head knowledge, it’s divine enablement and skillfulness from Heaven! It means that you’re skilled in whatever takes place.

For example, the Spirit of the Lord came upon King Saul in the Old Testament and gave him wisdom, as the occasion demanded.

Then the Spirit of the Lord will come upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man. And let it be, when these signs come to you, that you do as the occasion demands; for God is with you. 1 Samuel 10:6–7 NKJV

These verses are a picture of divine wisdom … and insight into the plans and purposes of God!

We all need wisdom from the Lord! We all have questions like, “Do we sell our house? Do we get that car? Where should our kids go to school?”

Sean said that he has two kids, and they went to different schools. This was because God was telling him what their destiny was. Sean’s son was more of an evangelist and more outspoken, so he spent some time in public school. Sean’s daughter was in a public school, but when they started introducing certain things, they pulled her out and put her in a Spirit-filled church school.

Wisdom is foresight into the future, so there is an aspect where Holy Spirit wants to show you what’s coming up!

We don’t have to wait for the 5:00 p.m. news to tell us what’s going on. We also don’t have to wait for social media to tell us. We don’t have to be caught off guard!

The Spirit of wisdom causes you to see what other people don’t see. Everybody can show you negative things happening in the world, but we get to see what God is doing! Sean said he needs wisdom like that, and the Partners agreed!

The average Christian puts out carnal judgments because they don’t wait to hear what Holy Spirit has to say. We judge in a vacuum apart from Holy Spirit.

Sean ended the session by challenging the Partners to get wisdom by asking God how He feels about a situation. If you do that, your perspective will change!
