Update on The New Sound from Heaven
Doug Addison

I have been getting some questions about the article I wrote called The New Sound from Heaven. First, if you have not read my article, start by *reading it before you comment. There is a link to it at the bottom of this posting. You don’t have to agree with me but what I do ask is that if you leave comments that you are nice about it. I want to be clear that what God spoke to me about the New Sound had one purpose, to awaken a revival in the young emerging generation.

Question: “I’m part of a worship/recording ministry, and we would love to know more about any equipment or software that you see as being key to the new sound. Is there any way you can break down the makeup of the music you’re hearing? Are there any particular sounds or samples that stand out? Is it drum-heavy? More ambient? High energy? Does it tend to be more melodic or repetitive? Are there any outstanding instruments? Does it sound airy, or chunky, or fluid, or fiery? Does the instrumentation/programming have a lot of complexity in the time signature and arrangement, or is it fairly straightforward? You mention it “reverberates forever”—do you mean it literally has a lot of reverb or echo effect applied? Is there an emphasis on high-, low-, or mid-range frequency?”

Doug’s answer: I am a musician too and understand music quite well; however, what I heard was advanced so it is not easy to define. It had a high energy techno dance feel to it – really interactive. Similar to programs like Guitar Hero, people without a lot of training could be part of the music. I heard it reverberating forever indicated that, like techno, the songs can go on and on in the Spirit.

God spoke to me two years ago about a hand-held DJ mixing device that was going to change music. The Pacemaker is the only one out there right now. There will still be music recorded using all types of instruments and various style but devices like the Pacemaker will soon be incorporated into live bands and create a crossover of rock/rap/hip-hop into a new hybrid of some type of “super-techno” for lack of a better term. With the Pacemaker technology there are no limits to what can be produced. God is limitless! I think the current DJ mixes that are using Pacemaker are not necessarily the New Sound. But the New Sound is out there. I am not saying that Pacemaker is the New Sound but watch this technology. I have one myself and I am working on some worship mixes and I want to find a live band willing to experiment with it.

Question: What will happen to existing Christian music?

Doug’s answer: Existing Christian music will continue on. God is not trying to make our current music obsolete. In the experience I had in which God allowed me to hear the New Sound from Heaven, Christians got angry at me about it. That is already happening! Apparently, Christians are very protective with their music. Just look at previous revivals and moves of God. Quite often, existing Christians fight against what God wants to do. I am not saying that all other music will become obsolete or is wrong. We need all types of styles to allow a variety of different people to worship God. This New Sound was designed to help a generation of people who have not yet experienced God to come to Him in a way that is unprecedented. The best thing is to ask God to “Give us ears to hear” in the Spirit and be willing to embrace the new.

Q: Will the New Sound be just one style of music?

Doug’s answer: It’s just like when the Beatles came on the scene—the anointing they had (that was originally from God but used by Satan to bring in a movement of Middle Eastern religion) spilled over into the music industry. It changed the music around them. When the Church finally embraced it in the 1970s and the Jesus People Movement happened, some music began to pick up a positive feel to it. Because God is limitless, I don’t think that we can limit the New Sound. Remember that the New Sound has a huge purpose: to awaken a young generation for God!!

This is really awesome. I had not read this article or the Aug 27th one, but I actually kept hearing the phrase, “new sounds coming.” I thought it was actually weird because I hadn’t really heard that phrase in about 7 yrs. I actually put it as my Facebook status on September 11!

Really appreciate it, Doug! I feel like I’ve got a much better idea of what you mean now, especially after checking out the Pacemaker site =)

One more question 🙂 Is there anything familiar to the sound in some of the electronic worship that’s out there, like what Caleb Brundidge, or the Banovs, or Benjamin Dunn have done?

Yes… we are all expecting great sounds, and I enjoyed your article. I believe, however, that you are only receiving one piece of the puzzle – like ‘prophesying in part’.
For some time, when I sit down at the keyboard, I’ve been asking God for the same thing. What the ‘new sound’ means to me, is using existing instruments in a different way, perhaps along side the new techno stuff you talk about, perhaps not. Has anyone tried to strum a piano?! As long as the atmosphere is changed, and God’s presence rides in on it, then let the music play!
May the Holy Ghost EVER be the greatest part of the ride, so that all people – young and old – will call the name of Jesus, be healed and be F R E E!

Betsy, I am not saying that the God is only going to anoint electronic music. Of course, God is always moving through all types of music. The experience I had (was not just a prophetic word) in which God showed me a coming move of God that was equivalent to the Jesus Movement of the 70s that was inspired by a new sound coming through electronic music. This was a world-wide movement for the young generation revival. This group of young people currently do not have much going for them and are not able to identify with the church on a larger scale. Yes indeed, God will also anoint other types of music as well. I have written an Update to the article but people are still misunderstanding me. Blessings to you and your ministry.
