How to Minister to the Human Spirit | Doug Addison with Arthur Burk [Episode 60]

Have you ever heard people talk about your spirit versus your soul?

Many people don’t really understand the differences between the two. Well, I’m especially excited today because sometimes there is revelation that makes my spirit leap—and this is one of those gems from Heaven.

Today, we’re going to venture out into some things that most people really don’t get to hear about (especially on Sunday morning) … and that’s why you tune into my podcast. God is releasing new revelation and new understanding. In fact, I felt the Lord say that there will be some listening who are going to get a breakthrough with this message.

In this Spirit Connection podcast, my special guest is a person who has helped me work through some “bumps in the road” in my life—Arthur Burk. He is part of the Sapphire Leadership Group and he is a very interesting man. Arthur’s a second-generation social entrepreneur, he founded a think tank in Anaheim, California, devoted to erasing the lines between the secular and the sacred.

He has a cutting-edge style and he’s now moving into an entirely new area, where he’s beginning to partner with the Holy Spirit in mental health. I’m personally excited, because Arthur taught me to understand the human spirit and how we can minister to a person’s spirit as opposed to their soul.

Here’s a sneak peek into our conversation:

  • “So, that whole sector of understanding that the human spirit and the Holy Spirit are best buds, they partner together, they work very fluidly … but they are two separate entities doing slightly different things.”
  • “We have a YouTube video called Your Spirit in Surgery. It teaches the human spirit how to function during surgery because the human spirit is conscious, the soul is not.”
  • “So, that realm of the human spirit being able to act on the human body was another revelation, one that we have developed … a lot.”
  • “Here’s the bottom line: Your spirit absolutely, positively, does not in any way, shape or form have autism … so we have a body that has a variety of nonfunctioning components and you have a soul that is deeply impacted by the body.”
  • “So, our identity in those three areas of which member of the trinity we are primarily expressing is rooted in our spirit, not our soul.”
  • “So, you work out your own sanctification theology, but the spirit needs change. When you look at the victims of satanic ritual abuse, you look at girls who have been sex trafficked, you look at people, kids that have been raised in abusive homes … and it does damage the spirit.”
  • “You didn’t know what happened, but you absolutely have experienced your spirit changing its posture and it affecting the functionality of your brain. Beautiful!”

  1. Kathryn Carter

I have loved Authur Burk for year and wanted him to minister to me for years to help with other things just no money. I felt like this is Key for Breakthroughs for me . I have his book Blessing your Spirit. I know I need deliverance and help with other issues he deals with in the Spirit.

      1. Wow. Just heard about Arthur last week and now here. Can the human spirit be wounded? And if so how do we heal the spirit?

    1. Kathryn, theSLG.com has TONS of free materials on YouTube and on the “Free Stuff” section of their website where you can chow down on growing your Spirit and deliverance. You can also visit his blog at NobleSubjects.com as well as Facebook and there are numerous Facebook groups where we discuss all sorts of things. If you need a friend to help move you through the process, you’ll find a whole Tribe!

When you get a check in your spirit that means you should to spend time in God’s word and in his presence to hear what God is saying to you. We bless you to spend time with Jesus and hear God clearly for your life.

  2. Thank you for the podcast, I really enjoyed listening to you both. I have played Arthurs ‘Blessing Your Spirit’ every night for over a year, and they have really changed the way that I wake up in the morning. I no longer wake up with anxiousness or worry. Bless you both.

  3. I’m glad he’s seeking answers to help people in tough situations, but where in the Bible did Jesus or his disciples expressly single out the human spirit for purposes of deliverance or healing? I see casting out evil spirits and healing the body in Jesus’ name, and I see where God’s Word and Spirit have power to transform our minds, which in turn, affects the emotions and body.

  4. Great podcast! How about the “power of the soul”? Are people able to do miracles or other signs through the power of their soul apart from the spirit?

    1. Nikki, InLight Connection Team

Hey Esther! We believe that we are able to do miracles because of the Holy Spirit working through our human spirits. We do not believe that people can act as God without partnering with God’s spirit. Many religions do believe that people can use the power of their mind to achieve different states of consciousness that may seem to be God-like. God bless you!

Really, the longer I live as a believer, the more I see and believe cost for ministry is critically wrong.
We are doing this not according to God’s will for His children.
It is very sad to not be able to afford ministry.
I believe and am beginning to walk in my heavenly inheritance apart from the world system, this inheritance needs to be released to the christian community.
Wealth stored up for us in the heavenlies waiting fir us to partake of it.

    1. Nikki, InLight Connection Team

Hey Elizabeth. We wish every resource we all need to grow and move forward in our lives was affordable and within our reach. The good news is that you have Jesus living inside you through the Holy Spirit who will help you grow in understanding God and your life purpose. God is fully able to help you grow and move forward within your means. This is why Doug offers so many free resources to help people like you connect with hearing God, encountering the supernatural and discovering your destiny. Keep pressing into God and He will move your forward where you need to be. We are blessing you!

    2. Remember SLG is a business This was mentioned in passing at the beginning. Elsewhere he describes himself as a businessman, rateher than a pastor or as leading a ministry. SLG is a business that uses biblical principles to help people. This is very different from having a ministry that uses biblical principles to fleece the flock.

Great question. Arthur is talking about teaching the human spirit to partner with the Holy Spirit to help fix problems in the body and soul. I believe hypnotherapy is using the mind (part of our soul) to help with a variety of body & soul problems. It is similar in that we are asking one part of our system to help find solutions to another part, but different in that our human spirit has full access to God through the Holy Spirit so we are engaging God in our healing process.

  6. What is the biblical basis for ministering by speaking to the “human spirit” specifically? I couldn’t find any examples in Scripture that teach this.

    1. I am intrigued by your question, Lauren. So, I am asking myself this question: If we are composed of spirit, soul & body, why can’t we allow the spirit part of ourselves to function, just like we allow our soul (mind) & our body to function, daily? Thoughts anyone?

      1. I’m still unclear on the biblical grounds for calling forth various portions of the “human spirit” in light of other Bible promises for followers of Jesus Christ…. i.e. our flesh/ old nature is “crucified with Christ,” we’re a “new creation,” our Temple is filled with the Holy Spirit, we don’t receive “the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God.” (1 Cor. 2:12). The [“Logos”] Word is the only means stated in Scripture to be “sharp” enough to rightly divide (Heb. 4:12). I couldn’t find a scriptural basis given for this method on the SLG website.

        1. Hi Lauren, a great place to answer your questions is Arthur’s book “Blessing Your Spirit”, which shares the 150+ verses in scripture that speak about the human spirit, too. Or his audio teaching “Nurturing Your Spirit: Basic Seminar” which shares the background, theology and steps for ministering to the spirit.

  7. I wept deeply through out the prayer. My spirit needed the recognition badly. I work in a deliverance ministry and have discussed with the leader how we are missing something crucial since there are some folks we just cannot lead to breakthrough of freedom. We have been frustrated but I believe this is the missing information we need to help these folks. I am so grateful I can trust my own spirit completely now! Thank you

  8. Hi sweethearted family,
Wow..I’ve never heard anything like this before! If this was a meal I’d probably say something like it’s a little too spicy for me !🌶 I love this ministry and all the Love, Wisdom and humility Doug walks in! Thank you for inviting us to try all kinds of “food” ✝️ You’re awesome 👏

  9. Is it possible that this message may not resonate with everyone? I love love love the message of righteousness through faith because of grace. The testimonials that Joseph Prince shares are breathtaking…they seem to practice an awareness of that verse, personally, regarding their righteousness in Christ and something happens where old behaviors begin to fall off. Tastes change, such as smoking and other addictions. Or, is this technique from Burke trying to get to the same place that Joseph Prince (and other teachers such as Rob Rufus, Andrew Womack, etc.) explain as attainable only through Grace?

(For me, nothing quite cheers me up than when I hear JP declare the price Jesus paid for grace.)

    1. Nikki, InLight Connection Team

Hey Barb! Arthur Burk’s focus is to help people understand the role of our human spirit in context with our body and soul. You can find more about his ministry at https://theslg.com. Bless you!

  10. This was really fascinating! Thanks a lot for doing this…

… has Doug interviewed Wendy Backlund? If not yet, that might be really interesting too! (thinking about this whole theme of the role of the human spirit)

    1. Nikki, InLight Connection Team

Hey Pessi! Doug has not yet interviewed Wendy for a podcast. He did interview Steve and Wendy for his Hearing God 365 school. You can look more into that school if you’d like here, https://hearinggod365.com/. God bless you!

  11. Interesting stuff, for sure! I will look more into Arthur’s work. I am about to finish the first draft of a book tentatively titled “Dividing Soul from Spirit,” so I may need to reword things a little in my first chapter. I’m glad for the opportunity to realize I need to look into scripture re: the spirit being wounded. Thanks as always, Doug! You continue to rock my world. 🙂

  12. I have a question about a figure in this blue back ground page. The figure to the left with an eye and large mouth showing it’s upper teeth. What is it?

    1. Nikki, InLight Connection Team

Hey Brenda! I am not sure exactly what it is. It is apart of the graffiti art that is on the wall in the background.

      1. I am in Deliverance Ministry and such a figure doesn’t look God honoring and could be hindering some blessings and clarity for Doug. I would just recommend a change in Jesus Name. Father God, in Jesus Name and by Your Holy Spirit, continually reveal and remove any hinderances to the fullness of Your Ministry for Doug Addison. Thank You PaPa. Amen.

        1. Nikki, InLight Connection Team

Thanks for sharing Brenda, we appreciate your insight. We will look into it. God bless you!

        2. Agreeing with Brenda Johnson’s prayer and recommendation for removing that image. I have been greatly blessed by Doug’s ministry & was moved to pray fervently for his healing in 2015, the year I first heard of him. Had I noticed that image before I came to know his ministry I might not have stuck around. Good eye, Brenda.
