Five Steps to Dealing with Transition

Change is everywhere. Old systems of finance and government are no longer effective. Transition is not always easy because as we leave one time period of our lives and go to the next, there is a lot of uncertainty. My favorite metaphor for transition compares it to going through a tunnel. As you enter, you don’t always know what’s on other side. While you are in the middle, you may not know what to do next. Once you are on the other side there is often climatic and atmospheric changes. So things that worked in the previous season may not work the same in the new. Someone recently asked me what can we do to handle transition well?
1. Embrace the change—Resisting change is counter-productive.
2. Expect rejection—People may not recognize your gifts and talents. What used to work may not now.
3. Look for clues—What can you learn from the past? Has God been directing you to something new?
4. Encourage yourself—Remember your accomplishments.
5. Do something practical—Take a simple step toward what you feel called to do. Maybe do some research, read a book, or talk with someone about it.
Philippians 3:13 “… But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead …”

Great advice Doug! Oh man, I hope I’m just in the tunnel right now.
