A Fresh Word About Your Identity

In this special excerpt, Javonni Flewellen shares some powerful insight from the life of Gideon.

Below are some notes from our Partners-only Monthly Mentoring Session. These sessions have been recorded and you can access them by becoming a Partner today! Find out more at DougAddison.com/TimeOff.

Javonni began by saying that right before something is completely solved, it looks completely scrambled. Everything can look like chaos the moment before breakthrough!

Next, Javonni talked about the story of Gideon in Judges 6. The Israelites were under oppression because the Midianites were devastating their crops. Everything they grew got stolen. Also, the Israelites were outnumbered. Actually, the Lord had handed the Israelites over to the Midianites because they were in disobedience.

In the midst of all this oppression, Gideon was literally hiding, and all his crops were about to get stolen. He was hiding whatever he could preserve, and the Angel of the Lord visited him.

Javonni pointed out that the angel visited Gideon when he was feeling cowardly, hopeless and scrambled. The angel said that the Lord was with him, and said he was a mighty man of valor.

The angel’s words were the direct opposite of how Gideon felt about himself. The words were also the opposite of how Gideon’s people were experiencing life.

Gideon wasn’t feeling like a warrior while he was hiding. He was wondering how he was going to survive! He was wondering how his people were going to get out of the mess they were in.

But the angel said that he was a mighty warrior!

Javonni challenged the Partners to ask the Lord to speak a fresh word of identity. And when the Lord speaks, it’s probably going to be the direct opposite of what you’ve been feeling!

Gideon put out a fleece because he didn’t quite believe the Lord. There was some process there… But, when he stepped into it—when he just decided to take a step and do what the Lord had asked him to do, which was to lead an army,—the Lord gave him victory!

Gideon just chose to agree!

Javonni asked the Lord to help us all agree with what He is doing right now.

Gideon had some dialogue and some doubts. He was focusing on his circumstances, his present reality and his insecurities. Often, we do the same!

But the Lord wasn’t asking Gideon about his insecurities.

Javonni went on to say that the Lord was saying our insecurities are not disqualifying factors. All our insecurities, including our financial situations, are not disqualifying factors!

The Lord is saying, “Go in the strength I have given you … not even the strength that you necessarily feel in the natural.”

Javonni encouraged the Partners to ask the Lord questions about our current season. Here are some examples:

  • Lord, what can I be celebrating in this season?
  • What are You doing in this season?
  • What are You going to do that I can look forward to?
  • Who am I, Lord?
  • Who are You?
  • Who are You causing me to become in You, in this process?

Write down what you hear and ponder these things with the Lord.

We’re all going from glory to glory … And every challenge is “unto” something. It’s unto the Lord getting the glory and a testimony!

Javonni pointed out that the Lord doesn’t cause sickness and disease, but if we go through those things, the Lord wastes nothing and He redeems.

Javonni ended by saying that she’s praying we can all come into greater agreement with what the Lord is calling us to in this hour, and who He is calling us all to become.
