In this special excerpt, Ray Leight shares how behavioral management ties into the fall of man … and more!
Below are some notes from our Partners-only Monthly Mentoring Session. These sessions have been recorded and you can access them by becoming a Partner today! Find out more at DougAddison.com/TimeOff.
Ray Leight started out the session by talking about the conviction of the Holy Spirit.
Early on in his Christian walk, Ray didn’t quite understand what the conviction of the Holy Spirit was. One time, he was speaking with a group of men who had personality disorders and all kinds of struggles. They were extremely wounded and traumatized, but they were also amazing, powerful men …
While he was speaking, Ray repeated what he’d heard others teach about conviction. When he did, it triggered half of the men in the room. These men had convictions with the state, and they’d been in prison … so the word conviction had a different meaning for them. At that moment, Ray decided to research what the Scriptures actually say.
He couldn’t find anywhere in the Scripture where it says Holy Spirit convicts a follower of Jesus—a new creation—of sin. He could find where it says that the Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin … because they don’t believe in Him (John 16:8).
Holy Spirit convicts us of righteousness and our righteous identity.
Holy Spirit convicts the enemy of judgment because he’s already judged.
The conviction of the Holy Spirit is that He is convincing you of the truth of who you are in Christ. That’s what He is doing right now!
He’s not trying to point out everything you’re doing wrong and trying to make you feel better about it. He is convicting and convincing you of your righteous identity in Christ. When He does this (revealing truth to you), He glorifies Jesus.
Some people are caught in constant confession. This can be a trap of behavioral management.
Ray has found that there is a system within the Church where people confess their sinful behaviors and self-protections, but they don’t ever get healed of the issues.
This is because people don’t get to the real sin, which is unbelief.
When the enemy lied to Adam and Eve and they believed the lie, that was the problem. Eating the fruit was a problem, but believing the lie was the main problem.
They never would have eaten the fruit if they didn’t believe the lie. Adam and Eve started self-protecting, and they covered themselves in fear, shame, guilt and blame. That’s the pattern that got handed down to us. This is the same destructive pattern that’s affecting everyone today.
So, the idea of needing to confess over and over is the lie that people believe. If you just confess the behavior, you can get lost in the details of past trauma.
What Ray has found is that you can stir up traumatic feelings and actually manifest more trauma.
This ties into another lie that Ray commonly sees … It’s the whole idea that you’re just a sinner with a wicked heart … that you can’t trust your heart, and it’s beyond a cure.
Jesus removed the wicked heart. He gave us a new heart! You no longer have that old, wicked heart, and you are no longer a sinner.
Yes, we sin. That’s one of the things that Ray jokes about. He says that he’s not a sinner, he just plays one in real life. He has unbelief, and he has manifestations of unbelief. He still has anger, fear, shame and guilt, like us all. We all have these things on some level.
Ray mentioned how the sense of us being undeserving or unholy can be a way that holiness is abused … Because the thought is that holiness is affected by our behavior.
Ray’s parting thoughts were these: God says, “Be holy because I am holy.” Is this because God behaves? Ray said he doesn’t think so. Ray said that God is holy because He IS holy. God doesn’t say, “Behave holy.” He says, “Be holy for I am holy.”
