Reconsider Your Thoughts with Your Heart

In this special excerpt, Ray Leight shares insights from counseling thousands of people. Some common lies are exposed, and Ray unpacks the keys for deliverance.

Below are some notes from our Partners-only Monthly Mentoring Session. These sessions have been recorded and you can access them by becoming a Partner today! Find out more at DougAddison.com/TimeOff.

Ray started the session by saying that he’s heard repentance described in different ways …

Some say repentance is to turn from a behavior and do a different behavior. Others say you need to feel bad about your behavior or it isn’t repentance. They think you need to feel bad because you’ve sinned against a good God, and you need to stop sinning.

None of that has anything to do with the word repentance.

What this mindset does is take everything back to behavioral management, behavioral righteousness and self-righteousness.

Repentance actually means to reconsider and think differently. It doesn’t mean to change your behavior. It also doesn’t mean to feel bad about what you’re doing. That’s not Scripture.

Ray mentioned Mark 1:15, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”

What this verse is saying is to reconsider what you’re thinking, think differently and believe the gospel. That’s what repentance is.

When you think differently, you will behave differently.

Faith always manifests itself. Faith without works is dead … Faith manifests works.

Your works are a manifestation of your faith. Your behavior is a manifestation of what you’re believing.

If you can work on your beliefs, you can change your behavior.

If you have an area in your life where you need to change, you need to get beyond trying to manage your behavior and you need to get to the belief that’s manifesting that behavior … so you can really experience change in your life.

Ray helps people discover the traumatized areas of their lives where they’re believing a lie and it’s just re-traumatizing them over and over again in that area of their heart … and they’re manifesting unhealthy behaviors because of it.

Ray said that many times, the traumatizing belief is so buried in people’s subconscious that they don’t know what it is most of the time. They just know the manifestation, and they keep trying to manage the behavior and the manifestation … They don’t get to the root issue. Ray helps people get to the root of the lie so they can actually repent, believe the gospel and manifest the truth of who they are.

Ray said that’s where the real work and healing is … walking out the truth of who you are. Sometimes you have to establish boundaries, communicate, change relationships and get out of certain situations.

Also, you can’t reconsider a thought you won’t consider. So, this is one of the areas of abuse where we’ve been separated from our hearts and thoughts.

Many have been taught to dissociate from themselves because their hearts are wicked. They’re told that you can’t trust your feelings, your emotions or your heart.

Ray emphasized that you can always trust your feelings—one hundred percent of the time. You can trust them to do what they were created to do … They were created to tell you what you’re feeling. It’s your head and your thoughts you can’t trust.

What are you thinking that’s manifesting your feelings?

Your heart is never lying to you. It’s your thoughts you need to check. You need to consider what you’re thinking and change that thinking.

That’s where the healing and change takes place … It doesn’t change by changing your behavior.

You can switch your behavior to be more socially acceptable. Ray has seen this thousands of times too, where the church helps somebody switch their behavior to a more culturally acceptable behavior. But the people are still not getting any healing. The lies will still manifest.

We need to actually consider what we’re thinking.

We need to be connected to our hearts and our heads … because to reconsider a thought, we have to first consider it.

And if we deny that we’re even thinking that thought, we can never reconsider it.

You can’t repent from a lie that you deny you believe. The stigma is that a “good Christian” would never think such and such. You think you can’t admit to thinking certain things. And then people are stuck in the dark, creating a cycle that runs them off a cliff.

We change our thinking with our heads … and our hearts!
