I’ve trained thousands of people how to interpret dreams and notice that people sometimes run into difficulty interpreting their dreams, especially when there isn’t a symbol in the common dream symbols lists. Here’s what I’ve done to help people along: look at what Jesus did and apply it to your life.

So what if we see a symbol that is not in the Bible?

Probably one of the most commonly asked questions I get is: “Where is that in the Bible?” When we do not see a symbol clearly defined in the Bible, you can use the process that Jesus did in Mark, Chapter 8. The context of this story is that Jesus and His disciples had just fed 4,000 people miraculously with a few fish and a small amount of bread. And afterwards they had seven basketfuls of bread left over.

Then He left them, got back into the boat, and crossed to the other side. The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat. “Be careful,” Jesus warned them. “Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod.” They discussed this with one another and said, “It is because we have no bread.” Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened? Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear?” (Mark 8:13–18)

When Jesus said, “Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees …, ” his disciples immediately thought He was speaking literally so they answered, “Is it because we have no bread?” At that point, Jesus told them that they must have eyes to see and ears to hear. What He was referring to was that they must develop symbolic understanding of things.

Let’s break it down more and pretend that this was a dream

Yeast goes into bread, and since the Pharisees were teachers, it is safe to say that the bread represented their teaching. Their teaching was like nourishment or spiritual food. But there was something else in their bread or teaching. Symbolically, yeast causes things to rise or puff up. So the hidden meaning of this small parable was to be careful because the teaching of the Pharisees causes pride. A lesson we can learn is to resist the urge to think literally when things in dreams are often symbolic.Develop symbolic understanding.

Think symbolically

It is interesting that this incident was not even listed as a parable among the commentaries. In fact, none of the commentaries even mention that this was a spiritual lesson on how to develop the ability to think symbolically and understand these hidden messages that God is sending. The Holy Spirit revealed this to me one day when I was reading this section from Mark. And I realized that it is a key to teach people how to understand symbols that we do not see clearly defined. If we do not see a sample clearly defined, then we can do what Jesus suggested and “think like yeast.”

Your dream life is an exciting place to hear from God and it’s fun to figure out what dreams mean. Learn to have “eyes that see” a symbol’s meaning as you work out the interpretations. Have fun with it!

Happy dreaming!

Doug, I have had dreams since I was A child. A lot of my dreams are
What actually is going on, not symbolic
When I was 11 I dreamed of my Sisters friend she had broken her leg. We saw her not long afterwards and she was in A cast. I ask her what was wrong and she said she fell off front porch and broke her leg. I once dreamed my Ex Husband was having an affair, he was.
I have known thing before they happened. For years I didn’t realize it was prophetic gift from God. You are such A blessing.

      Hello Linda,

A lot of my dreams are actual as well. I dreamed my grandma was on her death bed. She died three weeks later in a house fire. Sometimes I see actual scriptures that describe a real situation. I dreamed that a young man who lacked wisdom fell into adultery. The bible fell open in the dream to the scripture in proverbs and then I saw my husband in a house with another women. I also have symbolic dreams. When I dream of someone wearing boots, it usually relates to ministry.

Last night I had something very interesting happen to me and has me kinda not confused but I couldn’t tell if I was asleep dreaming or awake. What I experienced was I was looking at my husband’s dresser (which is really and armoire) and in front of it almost like if it was drawn on but it also was very very very bright white color an angel. Can anyone possibly know what it means?

I had a dream of my mother who died in 2010 around Christmas, and my grandmother, (my mothers, mother) was also in the dream. We were in a room. It seemed to be a bedroom. My grandmother was laying down and my mother was standing up. I heard my self say in the dream that I rather live with my grand mother, because my mom gets so emotional. I woke up after that. Any insight as to what this might mean?

I had a dream about my granddaughter. She was sitting Indian style (cross legged) on a wooden floor. A huge hand saw came down behind her. It started cutting a circle out around her. She had a peaceful smile on her face. The house was shaking and the floor and my granddaughter went down through the floor and out of the house. Any insight would be appreciated. I was dreaming that my sister was paralyzed. She was sitting in a wheel chair when she arrived to a family party. Her face was very light and calm and friendly. She looked like an innocent child or like a pure angel. She didn’t talk but I was very touched of her eyes. Nobody paid attention over her and that she was paralyzed. I placed her chair beside a staircase but of course not to close. But the chair suddenly moved and she fell down the stairs. She was hurted and unconscious. I was extremely worried and even desperate of guilt and I screamed orders to the family members what to do. I wish I knew what this dream has to tell about my sister and me.

I need help with what I think was a waking dream. But am uncertain. I visualize frequently the water of our lord washing me in a healing manner. But this time it changed, went from water to diamonds.

I do desperately need money. Could this just be me ?

The Lord has been increasing my dreams lately. They have become short and simple.
I dreamt of a man I went out with a few times. i opened my door, he was standing there with a gift box, I opened the gift box and in it were a brand new pair of sneakers, end of dream. Had a similar dream a month later, this time i was in a room full of people in 70’s attire, i turned to see him standing in an open doorway holding a training potty under his arm. Interesting, since i recently went shopping with my daughter for my Grandson and we were looking at a training potty because i plan on buying one. It is exciting when The Father speaks to us through Night Parables.

    Hi Doug,
My boyfriend had a dream last night that I was pregnant. He went with me to all all the doctor appointments, there were no complications with the pregnancy. However, there never was a baby born. What does this mean?

Hi, this past summer I had a dreamIi was on my mom-in-law kitchen (she is a believer) with my husband facing one direction, there were 2 groups of men that walked passing my husband ( he was to my left), they left and a second group came and I saw one of the faces and knew there was something wrong. as they walked towards the back counter I knew there was a chef’s knife. He grabbed the chef’s knife, took my left wrist and turned it so that my palm was facing up but the knife was now a much smaller steak knife. As he attempted to stab my palm the blade would curl up looking almost like a J. I think i woke up then. It’s one of those dreams I cant seem to forget.

I had a dream night that I do not really understand and cannot put the different pieces together to come up with an idea.
In my dream I had been sitting next to a close friend (M) that I have known since I was 16 (now 43). The dream change to were I woke up next to him on the couch and I was pregnant. My best friend (D) was in the room with us and she said she was pregnant by him too. I looked down at my belly and it had grown like I was 3 to 4 months pregnant but it had only been a couple of minutes. M said that he did not get D pregnant. She got made and left the room. M then told me it was not him and he did not know how she got pregnant. He told me he would take care of me and the baby. Then he went to kiss me and the face of my ex-boyfriend (from when I was 21) was on his body going to kiss me. I fell into his arms for the passionate kiss and to know I was going to be taken care of. D told the truth later about being pregnant by M, she said she said it because she knew he would take care of her — wanting to be in my shoes. They next couple of hours my stomach grew as though I was 5 to 6 months pregnant and the Dr. said I was having triplets. M vowed to stay by my side but he still looked like my ex. Then I jerked myself awake. This dream is really bugging me as to the relevance in my life. Can someone please give me some insight.
