The Law of Attraction and the Bible

The Law of Attraction and the Bible
By Doug Addison

Maybe you have heard about the “The Law of Attraction”. It was made popular in 2007 by the book and DVD, The Secret by Rhonda Byrne. Byrne and many other New Age and positive thinking motivational gurus claim that we can actually create what we want simply by thinking it and asking for it. It is controversial in the science world because their hypothesis defies current understanding of scientific principles. They do however, have an amazing amount of testimonies that it does work.

If you are a Christian and you are practicing the Law of Attraction or you know someone who is, please consider what I have to say. If you are not a Christian and you practice this, then please do not take this as I am judging you. The way I look at it is that, if you are seeking the truth, eventually you will stumble upon God who can offer an incredible amount of fulfillment, peace and joy to your life. Hopefully I will help shed some light on the subject and bring it into perspective.

Though the actual steps to The Law of Attraction varies based on what book you read, most of the positive thinking gurus teach people to follow these steps:

• You must be certain as to what it is you want.

• Then ask the Universe to give it to you.

• On a regular basis begin to visualize yourself receiving it, holding it, experiencing what it is you want.

• Be open to the fact that your answer may come in any form.

You may recognize many biblical principles in these steps:

Mark 11:24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

Romans 4:17 …He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed, the God who gives life to the dead and calls things that are not as though they were.

There are elements of truth to the Law of Attraction. My concern is the motivation behind it. We do need to be clear on what it is we want in life, and we need to ask God to fulfill it. The major difference in the Law of Attraction and the message of the Bible is that when you ask for something, you should ask God directly in the context of a personal relationship, as opposed to a cosmic “Universe” force that is somewhere out there. When we ask, we need to believe that He hears us and will answer our prayer one way or another. We do need to be cautious not to visualize something to the point that we are meditating on the item itself that we are asking for. This could easily cross over into idolatry. Remember it is God who is the giver and the source of all good gifts.

James 1:16-17 Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

Even though there are elements of truth in the claim of The Secret, they are very clear that they are not talking about asking the God of the Bible. They view God as a positive energy or force and not as a personal relationship. If you practice the Law of Attraction, be sure not to remove the source of true life and renewed thinking. The very people who took these biblical principles out of context and developed this humanistic teaching are in danger of being blind to the greater truth. They might be tapping into God’s principles but they are not tapping into God’s love and power.

Doing it God’s way
God created the world by speaking it into being. We are created in His image so therefore, we too have a creative power to speak into situations and bring about radical change. The missing element of the Law of Attraction is the principle of seeking God first, and being sure that what you are asking for is in His will and timing for your life. This balance is the powerful spiritual principle that will allow all the things we need to flow to us, instead of us trying to visually divert them our way.

Matthew 6:33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

If you have read the book or watched the DVD The Secret, or you are practicing the Law of Attraction, I hope you can see the points that I am making here and can heed this word of wisdom.  You can safely tap into God’s powerful biblical principles by doing the following steps:

• Develop a relationship with God through Jesus Christ and spend time regularly with Him in prayer and study. It will be out of a relationship with God that He answers your prayers.  Learn to recognize the voice of God when He is speaking to you.

• Ask God to show you that what you are asking for is something that He wants you to have or do. Ask for wisdom and that you will know His timing.

• Once you determine what it is you want, within the context of God’s will for your life, then have faith and believe that God will answer you. One way or another, He will answer your prayers.

• Pray and ask God for the things that you want and need. Be sure to track them and watch for answered prayer.

• Be prepared for the answer to come in a variety of ways. When you get an answer to prayer, let others know so that they can give God glory with you.

• Share your success stories with others so that their faith will be strengthened and they can receive encouragement.

God wants only the best for us all. He wants us to live our lives to our fullest potential. These radical principles of change have been in the Bible but unfortunately it was not a Christian who pointed them out to the world. Most people are running at half-throttle to what God has in mind for them.  God’s love and power is unlimited. The only thing that limits us is what we think we can actually accomplish.

Over the past twenty years I have developed what I call a “breakthrough lifestyle” that is actually similar to The Law of Attraction. It is based on Matthew 7:7 in which Jesus told us to ‘ask, seek, and knock” and we will receive. I have actively applied many of the life changing principles from the Bible and have obtained some radical results. Even more important, I have done it all in the context of a personal relationship with God through Jesus.

Here are three verses to consider:

Philippians 4:13 I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.

Psalms 37:4 Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Matthew 7:7-8 Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.

Thanks, Doug. this is good. Motive is a great foundational heart check. I’m finding that when I focus myself on seeking God in everything, I have been unknowingly working the LOA. This has “cut through the chase” as God’s Presence is escalating the arrival of what I am needing in the moment. The principle that is truly working the LOA is “Practicing the Presence,” and then when I need something, I ask and it arrives quickly. There’s no, or not as much, wasted energy of striving for breakthrough. In fact, the waste of energy happens when I find I am not in constant mental ascent towards His never-failing Presence. I just now found this article you posted and I’m going to fine-tune applying these scriptures. Your teaching couples well with Henry Blackaby’s “Experiencing God.” Thanks.

And you need to remember that the Devil came to “seek kill and destroy”.
So saying “If someone had a fear that came to pass, we should love them anyway”… Yikes!
Where in the Bible does it say our fears will come to pass because of something we did mentally? Wouldn’t you think God would want us “take our thoughts captive and to focus our minds on the things above” alley to have a better relationship with him, not because we “attract fears and all the negative thoughts” in random manner. Nowhere in the Bible does it say this or anything close to this, but it does discuss the workings of the devil. Anyone who is a proponent of this idea or the LOA is playing the devil’s games and giving him a pass.

Yeah but you are not understanding that people with pure OCD or neurological poisoning, ect *cant* always think positive but would be striving to keep their minds on the things of God and working with God. It is very un empathetic and not knowledgeable to think that they could control it. Yes we have creative power *through Christ and the power of the Holy Ghost* not the power of a thought. At the end of the day, if it is not Gods will it will *not manifest*. People with pure OCD worry that they will be a terrorist or they see flashing images of horror things and it is uncontrollable and they beg and pray for it to go away and not become reality. Assuming your thoughts attract your reality as if you are God is a “Garden of Eden” type philosophy. I think Christians should have nothing to do with the LOA even if there are “nice” things in it. It is a complete different heart space than you should be in, and by the way “The Secret” and the author’s inspiration has demonic origins.

I’ve read about the Law of attraction.
I’m a child of Jesus, and saved by grace.
However, I wanted to apply one part of the law-I printed down my long term goals(both are academic, I’m a student).
    This should be fine, right?
I want to read these once in a while, so that I feel motivated to study.
I know God is the giver of life and my all.

I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for this article, which is actually an answered prayer for me. I prayed for clarity regarding the Law of Attraction and its connection to God and His will and whether practising it was right or wrong. Iw as so confused because I recognised its principles paralleled with Jesus’ teachings, but many people that practise it seem to oppose God and Jesus, so I was really confused. Anyway, since I asked God to show me, all of a sudden the answer was popping up all over the place, suddenly and unexpectedly. And reading this has given me the answer I needed one hundred percent. Ia m so grateful to finally have the clarity and validation of what I felt I knew. Thank you so much.

As a Christian, I was hesitant to start using the Law of Attraction, Manifestation, and Meditation. I believe that when I use these three practices, it is the Holy Spirit I am speaking with. Still, I was hesitant because of what the Christian society deems as good or evil. It is more the label that people put onto what they practice – I practice prayer in a relationship with God in the form that someone would say is Manifestation. This article and the Bible verses helped me so much, thank!

Hi Doug I thank you for this article. I am a Christian who trusts God completely. I have a friend who has been practicing the secret for years and even attends lectures and seminars and plans to teach it. I am worried about her – she has also stated very clearly that she does not believe in the trinity; that Jesus was at most a prophet. Twice she verbally attacked me over my beliefs and although I was able to defend everything I said using scripture I was unsettled. Twice in the past year she has bled uncontrollably for months at a time; the last one required a transfusion. She also said she has an uneasy feeling in her house. I fear that she has let some negative energy in by practicing the secret without asking GOD for his blessing first. I suggested that she lay-off for a bit but she just scoffed. What should I do? Prudence tells me I’m out of my league.

Hey Stacy. Praying for her will be very powerful. If she is open to your feedback and advice then you can give her it, but it seems like she is shut off to it right now. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you the right words when she is open.

Ephesians 1:17 is a powerful prayer to pray over, that God gives her the spirit of wisdom and understanding. And however else you feel lead to pray, keep doing it! That will be very powerful!

I believe that you can ask a God for anything, if you don’t ask you don’t get, if it’s the wrong motive, you won’t get it. If you ask God and he agrees there’s a waiting period anyway, and you get the nudges as proof, you feel so much Love, you feel like electricity, you get an inner knowing, and eventually it happens, as God never lies. Also in the bible it says you see through spiritual eyes in the now. Everything is always in the now present with God. So if you have all these things happen you know it’s God, if you don’t and have no answer, then it’s not a good source your asking. If what your asking for to help to give for others, for strength to deal with situations, they are good motives, and God will look at your soul, heart then you receive then you know. But it’s still not over as while God works behind the scenes there is a birthing period, you planted the seed, then hard times, then the pregnancy, still your waiting and having to trust. So you must let go and let a God that’s it. God will always come through, not early never late always bang on time.

I was raised in a Godly home and have always been spiritual and highly imaginative; much of what I have seen and heard regarding laws of attraction I have had experiences with since I was a young child — I took inventory of these experiences, ones that took place long ago, and also recently; it occurred to me that the laws of attraction, when applied properly, were included in the Kingdom of God and had many Scripture references to back this up. In the Kingdom of God, your needs are met, as are the desires of your heart if they are good for you — you won’t need to chase after these things, force issues, or make them happen. — Cheryl B. In the mental health field, this “manifestation” philosophy is huge. I’ve come across it in counselling & while I could see the plus side of imagining victory instead of defeat, there are red flags I couldn’t put my finger on. It seemed like it could be a prayer practice, but I needed some biblical context. This helped articulate my concerns while acknowledging the truth in it – I love the term “breakthrough lifestyle”!!

But can I ask a question? Just to clear up my head because now, this is the only thought that bothers me. Why are there challenges or problems in life? Is it true that we attract them? Or There is a greater reason behind them? Thank you for you time! 🙂

The Secret, is a movie that is centered around one of the universal laws. I have been going through a MAJOR life situation recently, which has pushed me into a deeper relationship with God. It has also lead me to start reading anything I can get my hands on… The law of attraction, is a based in Metaphysics.
The more I read about metaphysics and the more I read my Bible, prayed and built my relationship with God, I realized that they are basically the same. Metaphysics, is more about acknowledging that God is in you and instead of looking outside of yourself for answers… look inward (inner space).

The ‘Universe’ which seems to be used as a term because most people are familiar with the Universe- Law of attraction I’ve read is the part, asking, but the other parts are how-to practice Gratitude and Love and a way to meditate day and night on ‘His’ word-which teaches love and forgiveness. Seems to be reaching people who are in a spiritual relationship with God- and those who aren’t blessed to be in one- yet giving them a way to connect to God and have that relationship.

I’m not wishing to sound judgemental but everything the speakers said had one common thread.
    •Everything revolved around “The Self”

It felt like a shallow imitation of all the benefits of Christianity, but Without Christ and all about “I”

It put me in mind of the magician in Acts of the Apostles, who wanted to purchase the gift of the Holy Spirit for personal gain.

I am a Christian. I watched The Secret DVD. I have a question. Is it wrong to use the good things about the Secret? For example, Count the things you’re grateful for and why you are grateful. I really like that and believe it is biblical. The Secret of course is NOT 100% biblical because it’s directed to the general audience. I see major biblical flaws in it. It has helped me to Think on Good Things. God doesn’t want us to be negative. The Secret by NO means replaces God’s Word but is it unbiblical to use it together? If I had to choose – I choose Jesus and the Bible.

I worry about those with ocd / fears being told their visualizations and fears will “manifest”. We need God and his love to use everything meant to harm us for our good. Without this we run the risk of victim blaming and things like “ they thought themselves into that illness” “they attracted that into their life”
His ways are not our ways.

It is important though to set our minds on things above and take our thoughts captive. If someone doesn’t though, our heart should always be to love them and encourage them. Bless you!

I only partially agree with you. I can agree that there are people that use the law of attraction generically and they may even reap some benefit from it. However, this is not entirely the case. Your Invisible Power by Genevieve Behrend states in the introduction that true fulfillment can only be achieved when your desire is to “Be”. To put that in the exact context she used it in ~ Whereas the LOA can be used to fulfill your desires and provide you with any earthly manifestation that you can imagine and hold with faith, it is only when your desire is to enact your potential and your purpose that you will receive fulfillment.

How can you disregard God and ever achieve this? I argue that it is ONLY through a direct connection with God that you can EVER achieve this.

Most of what I have read regarding LOA refers to God as the creative spirit of the life. Some will argue that that is a separation of recognition of God but, God is the creative spirit of life. Both “God” and “The Creative Spirit of Life” are titles. The bible speaks of many gods and the title “God” is not very specific as to which god you are referring. “The Creative Spirit of Life” is very specific. It refers specifically to The God of Creation. You must have faith in this spirit and the laws of this spirit in order to align yourself with its rewards. You have to admit and recognize that you are a satellite of this spirit and it is only because of this that you can have any power at all. You must have so much faith in this connection that ANYTHING you imagine which do not go against the laws of God and do not put yourself in a different relation to God, WILL BE DONE.

The LOA, if followed properly force you to be a child of The God of Creation with faith outweighing most professed Christians. We haven’t even touched the preparation to be able to achieve the LOA results. You have to remove negativity and fear from your heart and mind. This is absolutely in accordance with God’s word and probably only achievable through God in the first place. You have to practice patience, respect, forgiveness and every other positive emotion/attitude you can imagine. These are all teachings of Jesus. Failure to fill yourself with positivity and it’s accompanying reactions will be the failure of you to successfully attract what you desire or at least to some degree. The whole point is to raise your vibrations so things of high vibration will be attracted to you.

Now let’s consider diet. Its not very likely you will raise your vibrations and lead a positive life if your body is a toxic dump. This means that keeping your body pure or as close as possible is a must. Jesus taught us how to do this through the proper diet and fasting. So yet again we are following Jesus to have our bodies in the proper condition to adhere to the very strict guidelines of the LOA.

To say the LOA is “skirting” God through an abuse of his unchanging laws is also to say that you are not receiving the full benefits of the LOA. It is only through the recognition of the God of Creation and following the teachings of Jesus that the full power of the law (or anything even close) can be achieved. For you to want “an expensive car”, picture it, believe in it and receive it is a really low accomplishment. If you follow the path necessary to truly benefit from the LOA you become absorbed by God regardless of what name (or no name) you use. Your desires and manifestation of them become based on your potential and purpose ~ a potential and purpose that God gave you. Cars, money, fame, etc aren’t even in your consideration. Those things will be provided as needed and maybe only while needed, as afterthoughts, while you follow your intended path.

If we truly followed the teachings of Jesus we would realize that Jesus said more with actions than words. He showed us the true potential of man and what a man could/should be. Jesus was a master of the 12 laws and he tried to explain to man how to master them. Some of his apostles did pretty good considering they weren’t a direct descendant of God. They too performed miracles and enacted their potential and purpose. It’s only a “miracle” cause almost all of us cant realize these are our natural powers. We are waking up to these truths but, sadly, many of us who understand how to use the LOA are shooting for temporary fulfillment and self-satisfaction, too blinded by what they can touch and possess to realize there is this whole other thing much higher up the chart that makes what they are shooting for seem almost silly and mostly useless in the overall picture. In a way you can look at it like the little girl that wants a pony and doesn’t even consider that she could have a unicorn (metaphorically).

Thank you for the article. So many false teachings have poisoned the Body of Christ. There are too many to name but the “Law of Attraction” is certainly on the list. How easily fooled people are when a feel good teaching creeps into the Church and those of us who question it are labeled rebellious and not having faith for a “new” move of God.
I weep when people are so easily deceived. I was a proportion of a well know gospel having to do with prosperity but strong biblical mentors and a lot of studying the Word showed me my flaw.

I was in therapy this week and the Law of Attraction was brought up. It makes sense to me, but it feels much like what being a Christain is, in part. I feel like I am sinning if I practice this law. I am still not very sure about this. My heart is telling me NO (and I believe the Holy Spirit lives in my heart). So maybe there is my answer. I want to find the truth, and I think the Law of attraction is partly true, but it is missing God. I will not judge others for practicing the law of attraction – who am I to judge? This was a very helpful article! Thank you so much for this! I am going to lean on my Faith before anything, but my research has just begun. I would not mind if someone would comment either way! I am open minded and will listen to anyone. My Faith, however, comes first!

I believe the law of attraction is like a rule or law such as how gravity is on Earth. It doesnt matter if you’re good or bad if you jump off a building you will plummet. I believe that this is God’s invention but I don’t think you need to be Christain to use it. Reasons why: you can be good or bad and it will still work. Although, I don’t think we should just forget get about God. In way this is like a gift to all humankind from God.
    Mark 11:23
“Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.
I have personally experience this when I was but a child I would imagine things happen or believe something would happen with confidence and it would happen. Small things like I would believe I would win a lottery ticket game in class, and each time I would. Or I would imagine seeing my friends walking down the street in my mind and it would happen. At that time I was a christain. When I was older and I wasn’t a christain, the law attraction still worked such I would wonder and want to be close to someone and I would repeatedly see them. It was weird. I’m christain now after having a traumatic experience, and this time I’m closer to God. We can used this gift to either serve God or not. He gives us this choice.
Wherever the law of attraction comes, it works, and am grateful. And bbelieve it comes from God.
But maybe I’m wrong about the law of attraction. But for sure I have experienced it.

This is so helpful; and this is true. I have accepted Jesus as my lord and savior, but I have turned against him and have forsaken my grace in numerous years and moments in my life. Through temptations and lists of the world, and about a year and a half ago in the beginning of 2016 I started to learn about meditation, I started to incorporate it in my life regularly and I learned about the law of attraction. I thought I was so great and powerful because I could do and have anything I wanted, just last year I moved to California to pursue a music producing career and I as well had the best job in my life in the Bay Area; until I recently discovered that, if true according to human research and evidence, that if what people have discovered about the revelation 12 prophetical sign really about to happen on 9-23-17; I immediately turned back to Christ and I just am trying to give up everything to him because it doesn’t matter compared to our judgment, and refinement on the day of atonement. Anyways the point is this is true, using the law of attraction is against god, yhvh, because instead of asking god for help and seeking his will for your life, you are basically saying this is what I want so I’m going to create it for myself and hopefully you bless this god and it’s okay with you. When really we are creating a harder judgment for ourselves because let’s be honest. What do most people try and attract, money, love, nice materials, or career, and these are all things that will end up pushing you further from Jesus Christ. Anyways that was the information I had to offer hope you all take well from this.

Thanks for sharing Shawn. It is wonderful you are pursing God first, rather than the things of this world. You are right, many times we can say, God bless this, and it’s not something God wants for us. As we draw near to God, His desires become our desires, and that is an excellent place to be.

    Hello,

I was a Christian for all of my life until I got to around 18 when I realised I didn’t have to be scared and live in fear of people going to hell and the rapture about to happen at any moment. Also I prayed everyday, my mother was a christian councillor and we were a close family, godly unit. So many bad things happened continuously throughout my life, people were dying, getting ill, losing battles and living poor lifestyles. When I was 26 I watched The Secret and I have never looked back, never been happier, I am full of life, health and positivity. My career is succeeding, life is beautiful and I am so grateful to be a part of it and have everything I hold. I think it is a simple thing as I don’t necessarily believe in one ultimate power, more the idea that my positive thoughts influence my actions which anticipate my future. My mum now thinks I am heading down a slippery slope and I felt that pull of negativity and dismissed it as my life has been evidence of how you can have bad and good things happen. And I was a little saddened to realise that something as positive as the laws of attraction can be so made to seem wrong. As if you’re not allowed to have a happy, healthy life free from fear. Just my opinions

Hey Jessica! Thanks a lot for sharing. I’m so glad you no longer live in fear.

God wants us to have a happy, healthy live free from fear. God does not give us the spirit of fear and He wants our thoughts to be good and pure.

The downside of Law of Attraction is when it takes away the relationship aspect between you and God, which is ultimate happiness. He is so loving and kind that He wants to be involved in every detail of your life and give you the desires of your heart, rather than you just having positive thoughts that attract the what you want. If we only have thoughts about good things, we take prayer out which is our main way in communicating with God and we lose sight of His power and love, which is our life source.

I appreciate your input and opinion. Bless you Jessica!

The law of attraction happens naturally for everyone no one can stop it. God created the law of attraction. This energy was put there in the very beginning for us. But most people use this energy to attract thing . And they forget Jesus because they don’t require his help. It’s like God gave eyes to see good things and not to see bad evil, or dirty things. So use the law of attraction to attract good things and not bad things and also remember to love and thank Jesus.

    Alexia is spot on…
I’m a student of LOA through the lens of my religious up bringing where we memorized scripture and were told God loves us unconditionally. Today, I do understand that God loves us ALL unconditionally. But guess what, we also have a choice as to how we align with him.

God is in each of us, no exceptions. We can choose to acknowledge His existence in us or choose not to. But when we choose to align our lives with our spirit, our innerbeing, God himself, all things work together for His good. it has to.

I’ve met countless Christians living lives that are meaningless and just going through the motions saying how much they love Jesus. I don’t doubt their sincerity but how miserable they are paints a good picture of what is really going on on the inside.

Same is true for all of us whether religious or not. We all choose and make our lives based upon them. So choose wisely as they say.

I believe in the LOA from a biblical point of view. i believe God is the great Architect of the Universe and that nothing is impossible for me. God wants the best for me and with Faith and confidence, I know God will deliver to me my desires in accordance with His divine guidance because it cannot be any other way. Belief is Everything.

Interesting but I personally believe that the laws of attraction provide a very important missing piece in Christianity. The flaw with how God is currently interpreted is that we speak about God as if he a person not an infinite energy or spirit. We talk about building relationships with him like he is a human being. But God is far greater than that and probably should not be discussed in such terms. In addition, you have a very limited understanding of laws of attraction, it actually discusses getting closer to the source energy or infinite energy of the universe and being guilded by how you feel. If you feel good then you’re connected, if you feel bad the you are disconnected. This is really important because God is a good God and can and will provide us with good things. We are extensions of him and the laws of attraction teaches us the we are extensions of the infinite energy from the universe. So think about this….if laws of attraction say that you are what you attract and that you can attract good or bad based on how connected you are to source energy, then how is that any different from saying that you need to get closer to God in order to be a better person and get what you need in life? It’s not. Again, Christianity tells you how to live your life but laws of attraction is about connecting to what you feel based on your connection with source and feeling your way closer to it. And by “it” I mean closer to God and/or the universe. This also better explains why bad things happen. The concept of God allowing a Devil to exist seems questionabl; however, the concept of free will and you having the ability to move towards him or away from him makes more sense and explains why we have so many problems in the world. I wish we as Christians could understand that the way we interpret religion now is based on someone else’s interpretation many centuries ago and we have learned so much more now and that our understanding of God and Christianity should be evolving instead of remaining so stagnant. Any new approach is met with such negativity.

I was given a massage from GOD and it was horrible he placed me in hell and asked me to choose and I chose to meditate in him and consult him, he quickly answered me to read zephanian book in the Bible and Luke 21:34 believe Me this message came from GOD please don’t let me get to haven and find out that you are not coming. Clearest, ‘cleanest’ piece I’ve heard yet about LOA and Christianity. The same feeling of being pulled took me to a LOA life coaching course, and 18 months later, through the doors of our local Church. I find it hard to believe God doesn’t have a use for LOA teachings. The reason I set LOaa aside on becoming Christian (apart from our lovely Pastor telling me it was not biblical) was an overwhelming sense that miracles should not be taught without explicitly giving the honor to God.

I agree with a lot of what your saying. However I believe it a law of the universe such as gravity for instance that was created by God. It’s the same law that provides food ever day the bird that never stores up but it always fed by nature. So, as long as we exault God in gratitude for what we desire to attract it is not idolizing that which we seek. It is the manifestion of graduate and faith. Ask, picture it, feel grateful to God, receive.

    Good article and interesting comments!

I believe the LOA is one of many of God’s laws, yet like most things can be misrepresented or misused. My primary concerns from a Christian perspective of traditional LOA teaching is that:

    1. God is impersonal
    2. It’s dangerous to say we alone are responsible for what we attract (think the sexual abuse victim)
    3. It is manipulated for selfish pursuits

‘The God Attraction: a fresh revelation on the Law of Attraction’ by Craig Merrett is a very helpful book that I’ve seen on Amazon 🙂

After first reading The Secret by Rhonda Byrne, I felt some discomfort with the law of attraction as depicted in that book because it seemed to leave God out of the picture and seemed self-serving. I was later drawn to another book, The Power of Intention by Dr. Wayne Dyer. This book was much more in depth and, I felt, included God in the law of attraction, even though he used several different names, including God, The Source, the Universe. I felt that in doing this, he was including everyone, not just Christians. God IS the source and the creator and the universe. Christians are not the only group of people that the law of attraction applies to. This book also explained how you might attract things into your life but you should never become too attached because everything ultimately belongs to God and it may disappear from your life as quickly as it arrived. You should simply feel that you were blessed for the time you had it in your life.

This makes good sense, but for me as a Christian, I feel it wrong of me to sit back knowing others, say in a group event for instance with me, to be led in a direction other than Jesus. Isnt it part of our purpose here on earth to share Him with others. I for some reason free I would be denying them the chance to know Him and them be led astray and never knowing him. I understand we all arent the same in beliefs, but for me it hurts my heart for people to not know Him like we know Him. I hope this makes sense.

So the very laws that God put in place for our benefit, you will take and say that they are doctrines of devils. Did the devil create the world? Was the devil the one at the beginning of creation making sure that Quantum Physics was the order by which humans create? When we pray for someone’s healing, instead of praying empty prayers that have no effect, we can pray for someone’s full health and it is done. Is that also devilish? Have you ever heard of an ancient sect called the Pharisees? You both share some very noble and similar viewpoints…

    Thank you brother.

As someone who left Christianity behind many years ago and through a journey of spirituality, was lead to the law of attraction along with many other ideas and philosophy’s, I must say how grateful I am to you for writing this article.

Recently I have had a “God Fearing” feeling taking over me. Someone came to me and said that God is angry at me for not taking care of myself (which in fairness, I wasn’t)

Since then I have started to care for myself more than ever. I’m eating well, exercising and making efforts to immerse myself in the world again. But accompanying this new found self care that God desires me to have has came this fear. “God is angry with you,” had a great effect. Firstly as I was leaning more towards the idea of my higher power being “the universe” as I had seen it work/deliver so many times through practice, so now to have God come to save me from my darkest point really through my belief system into haywire.
And secondly, God was angry at me. And for the two weeks following this message I was given no message to say I was on the right path, I was praying, crying, practically begging for an answer, but nothing came.

However, I have started to attend a 12 Step Fellowship, I am praying (almost) daily and I am meditating too.

I guess I am so stuck on labels “Christianity” “law of attraction” “Buddism” “Sacred Geometry” the list goes on. When really, it is all the same. God is loving. He wants what’s best for us and what Jesus preaches is true.

Last night I meditated and prayed. And I awoke in the early hours, not to a voice, but purely to music in my ears. Beautiful music and a list of images of the things I am doing right in my life.

I am thankful to The Lord for this. I know he understands and loves me.

I have been considering going back to church for a while and now, after last night, and thanks to your article, I will. My law of attraction practice feels so right, but so, of course, does The Lord. And you have helped me understand the two.

Thank you for helping me establish that I am on the right path and that everything really does link back to the beliefs I’ve held deep within from being a child.

Thank you, and God Bless x

Hello Ruth. I had a similar experience. I lost my childlike faith when my husband died. And have been on a merry-go-round of spiritual practices including LOA. I got my fingers burnt with applied kiniseology and an ‘energy alignment’ method. A bad experience that brought me up sharp. Afterwards I read this: ‘remember that the Lord your God corrects and punishes you just as a father disciplines his children. So then as the Lord has commanded you. Live according to His laws and obey him.’ Deuteronomy 8 v 5,6.

Thank you for this insightful article. How much richer to work with our heavenly Father (two little words that contain more than we can begin to comprehend- and yet we do deep down!) than struggle along on our own…

I’m glad I came across this article. I had heard of the Law of Attraction before I found Christ, mostly through metaphysical means. It always seemed so far-fetched to me, even before I became Christian. Now, after reading this and just all of a sudden being pulled in this direction, it is much more clear. Like when Peter walks out on the water to be with Jesus, and begins to sink due to his lack of faith, the law of attraction is faith. It can, obviously, be used by the Devil, just as the serpent told Eve to eat the forbidden fruit and become God-like. The Devil can make us feel God-like. Technically speaking, any person can use the law of attraction, no matter their religion or spiritual view, but any way other than through Christ, is the Devil at work. It is so interesting to see how much influence evil has on humanity, and most don’t even realize it. Wouldn’t you agree that if one is using the law of attraction, and it actually works for them, that they are either doing so through good, or evil? I believe so. The devil will give us whatever we want, just so that we don’t follow Christ. Only through Christ will we attract things we absolutely need in our life. This article definitely makes The Law of Prayer more clear.

Trying to stay away from the law of attraction is like trying to stay away from the law of gravity, because you’re subject to both laws in the same way, whether you like it or not. Your thoughts and feelings have consequences in your life and the lives of others; that’s how God intended it to be when he created us and made us His little co-creators…

I agree that God is Love, but, more precisely, God is EVERYTHING. If there was no ‘bad’ in the world (in God’s creation), how could we strive for good? And of course bad didn’t somehow ‘slip in’, because everything is God’s creation.

Is it so hard to imagine that God created us, humans, to experience life through us? Of course, as is the case with all human concepts this one also isn’t perfectly logical or even understandable, because why would a perfect Being desire anything in the first place? (that would imply that there are/were things not included in this perfect Being); I know, the answer for most is: ‘God works in mysterious ways’ and I agree to that.

For me, God and His creation, which all of us are part of (including people like Hitler and everybody and everything else in this world, unless you believe that there’s another Creator, besides God…), is a wonderful Mystery that’s meant to be experienced, to be lived, to be acted upon, to be experienced. The only way the world makes sense to me is to imagine that, indeed, I am a little god (made in God’s image) – and of course, it would be pretty boring is there wasn’t also a little devil active in me too, sometimes 🙂

Everything comes from God and if you don’t acknowledge that, you are committing blasphemy…

There is no getting away from God, isn’t that a wonderful thought?

    Bless you all

Actually…I agree that the Law of attraction is from the Bible but my source is God. period… The only thing that I don’t agree with is someone’s comment on visualization. I believe in seeing something I desire in the natural first because I believe that it will happen by faith. There is absolutely nothing wrong with visualization. It’s probably something that the church having preached based on lack of understanding or knowledge on the subject. It’s really easy and spiritually safe.

I have plans to add visualization to my prayer. I just finished listening to The Secret on CD. I think so much of it can be added to my walk with God and will be adding the steps to what I already do as a Christian. Everything is made new in Christ and I believe that the principles of the law of attraction are just part of God’s perfect creation. As long as it doesn’t separate us from God, it’s a good way of thinking and remaining positively geared toward what we already pray for!

Excellent post. I’m a recently renewed Christian after a long period of experimenting with other belief systems (which all end up oh-so-empty). I’ve been coming across the law of attraction and it is indeed confusing since there are overlaps of truth in it. Thank God for google and leading me to your post; you beautifully clarified the issues with Jesus at the heart. Ty!!

      Hi Lilian,
Visualizing is something the prophets did often. Visualizing is a tool, a kind of language of the mind, just like English is a tool a language of the mouth. Is it wrong to speak English? It depends on what I’m saying and why I’m saying it. Is it wrong to visualize my desires coming to me from God? It depends on what I’m visualizing and why I’m visualizing it. The tool is useful if used rightly.

Grateful for these insights. I agree that the Law of Attraction is at work just as the Law of Gravity is. But we serve the God who designed both for His purposes and His glory. We should follow the Bible while understanding ‘as a man thinketh so is he’ and’for lack of vision, my people perish’ and ‘a joyful heart is good medicine’ along with the other verses you mentioned.

What did the people of Sodom and Gomorrah do to attract fire upon them? What did the people in the time of Noah do to attract the Flood upon them? What is this generation of people doing to attract the wrath of God upon them?

“…. 3 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,…” (1 Timothy 3:1-5).

Do you know that men are attracting the wrath of God? By doing and condoning these kinds of things, which includes legalization homosexuality and all the sins.

Those who believe in this law of attraction should be actively working to get men to change their minds, repent and abandon their sins. Otherwise, their lives are doom to face God’s wrath according to the Law of attraction.

Instead of doing the right thing, the supporters of this law get men to even engage in seeking more material possessions based on greed, which is idolatry (Ephesians 5:5). Which all attract even more of the wrath of God which is already on its way right now.

Those who do not repent, change their minds, will face and attract the wrath of God. This is also law of attraction. Therefore the most important work to do today is to launch a BIG CALL FOR REPENTANCE, CHANGE OF MIND, FOLLOW CHRIST AND SANCTIFICATION LIFE. Otherwise people attract the wrath of God, and they will face the wrath of God after they die or in the judgement day..

    AMEN

I wanted to say that I am a Christian. I watched The Secret located in the faith and spirituality section of Netflix. I was surprised that it was in this section since God was briefly mentioned towards the end of the documentary. The movie seemed to be in line with the bible although I had to fill in all the voids myself with with the real source of my being, which is God, who I indeed have a personal relationship with. The documentary put too much emphasis on making enormous amounts of money and not enough on living the life that Jesus taught. I could see how the movie could give a twist to a very strong Christian who might need to look at things differently. But I see how it would be too self-seeking to a non-christian who needs to seek Christ. After my second watching of the documentary, my eyes were finally opened as I heard one of them say, “We are god in human form.” Notice the lower case ‘g’ because Jesus is God who came in human form, and not anyone else. Ever. Thank you Doug for your words and for the process that one can make to do the will of God and act upon it. It is the right way to go.

I guess the following verses mean nothing to you then?

Psalms 82:6 – “I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.”

And also the VERY words of Jesus himself:

John 10:34 – “Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?”

This means that God has given us the ability to create at will, as gods do. We are in fact an extension of God as everything in the world comes from his very existence.

Yes I feel as tho most think it’s too good to be true. They would rather separate themselves from God. Instead of realizing they are God. Created in gods likeness. As our children are created in our likeness. Which mean we have been given the same power. We are all one. Spiritual beings living a human experience and God is non judgmental and just wants us to learn, grow, love, experience. Most ppl livi g by laws of the universe. Law of attraction being o ly one law are good ppl. I know it changed my life. I use to claim to be a Christian. But now I know who I am. An immortal being. Here to help other fi d the truth that will set them free. Free from fear, worry, doubt, guilt ect.

          • Absolutely! First of all he started the conversation by saying he didnt want to come off judgemental but you are in the same thought. In my opinion, God created the universe, we are not the only living thing in the universe, we are source energy, I was raised in the church and up until I was 36 the last year I have attracted strength in myself of knowing who Iam not living in fear, manifesting what I desire, showing more gratitude, they dont teach this in school or church… Its all about the bible which is a man made book written by people who force it on you or your going too Hell. I love GOD and I love the great and many teachings of Jesus Christ, but he did not write the bible and energy and the source of God moves through vibrations not text or words. Continue to be bless!

No matter what you think on law of attraction..God is the alpha and omega who knows the end to the beginning..it does not help to justify your beliefs concerning LOA but first seek the kingdom and the rest will be a bonus..i mean desire to please God and He will see you through..LOA first came into explanation through science..Cosmic,quantum,metaphysics..science is inadequate and it may never help you find fulfilment you want..Ask God for direction over your life..God bless

It also seems to be a law that when we, flawed human beings, get hold of a half truth, we seem to always get hold of the wrong half! You offer a critical and significant point of clarification. Thank you, Doug.

Fabulous! Thank you very much, Doug! It seems a relief to put my trust in God’s provision for the things I need rather than in my own thinking or pressure to ‘do things right”. Especially when I don’t know what is best for me anyway 🙂

I agree with your comment. I came across the Secret and feel that the Oprah Winfrey through Super Soul Sunday is also making God an impersonal life source. It is good to promote filling their spiritual needs yet without seeing God as a real figure-entity takes away our ability to reach out to him and have a relationship with.

I have to say as a Christian woman,Oprah is very dangerous in what she promotes on tv to the world. She calls herself a Christian but she is not. I say this because in order for someone to be a real Christian, you would first agree with the Word of God,and she doesn’t! She said it right on her show a few times, she said”there is no way that there is only ONE WAY to God!”,then someone from the audience, clearly a Christian woman said “There is only one way and that is through Jesus Christ!” So be careful, just because you think Oprah’s smart doesnt mean she has all of the answers! And honestly,I think too many give her too much credit and idolize her,and that’s a no no! What she actually teaches is New Age philosophies, and people who go by that philosophy will Im afraid not be going to Heaven because they rejected Gods truth for a lie.

A small voice cautioned me with an image of the Lord’s sad countenance and the First Commandment. Your explanation reinforced His gift of intuition. Mankind’s delusion that our limited intellectual horsepower can decipher His miraculous universe never ceases to amaze me.
May the Holy Spirit continue to use your faith and biblical knowledge to guide others toward the one true path.

I myself was heading to that direction bur inside I was wondering something was not right. First, the book does not give God the glory He deserves, instead, the call him higher power or the universe.
In short, it is true that the book teaches some good stuffs but as a thrue Christian we have to be aware of different philosophies coming out there in the name of Good.

Our perceptions are based off beliefs we have created. Fact is God is in everything. We are not our bodies. Everything in this universe is made of energy. We are truly spirit. We are immortal. And when we die we take our original form as that spirit or energy or vibration. We are spiritual beings having a human experience. We have been taught that God is an old man in heaven and most all believe this. Truth be told I can’t buy in to that anymore because I know the bible teaches to go away from what most ppl are doing. And religion is a type of control. Freedom comes in knowing you create your reality. And what u put out u get back. And if u follow the universal laws you will experience heaven. Heaven is within each of us. Not outside of us as they want us to believe. It is much deeper than the law of attraction. But religion is far off too. Just know if you really want the truth u will continually ask for it. If you believe u already found it then u will stay right where u are. The truth is deeper then most can understand. You must be on a very high subconscious level and even then there always more to learn. I bless you on your journey. The truth shall set yu free.

Luke 17:20-21 King James Version (KJV)
20 And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:
21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

Thank you so much for your spiritual insight in reference to the law of attraction. I cannot imagine such a law having that kind flower and not having it come from God. All good gifts come from God. It’s also a relief to know that other Christians have read the book or watched the DVD and that we have sought out the “truth” in relation to law of attraction that certainly comes only from God.
