What to Do When All Your Choices Are Good

“How do I narrow down my options when all the choices are good ones?”

This is a common question I’ve received in my years of being a prophetic life coach. It may seem easier to choose when all the choices—except one—are not good. But what happens when all your options are great?

Here are a few strategies I like to use when I need to make an important decision.

#1 Take a moment and ask for help.

Sometimes you need to take your eyes off your problem/decision and look up!

I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? Psalm 121:1 NIV

Your help isn’t going to come from staring at your problem. It’s going to come from the Lord!

My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. Psalm 121:2 NIV

#2 There’s no need to rush.

When deciding on what to do, it can start to feel like everything else in your life is standing still. We often think that we must decide right this moment.

This internal pressure we put ourselves under can end up making us feel rushed, resulting in making a poor choice.

Very few decisions have to actually be made “right this second.” It’s okay to take some time to think and reflect before choosing. The bigger the decision, the more time you’ll probably need to reflect.

#3 Maybe God is saying, “I trust you.”

Sometimes we’re waiting on God to specifically tell us what to do, when really, He’s saying, “I trust you to make this decision.”

We aren’t robots, and God knows that. He wants us to interact with Him, be creative and make decisions!

There are several instances of people interacting with God:

  • Moses asked God to spare the Israelites when they worshipped the golden calf. (Exodus 32:11–14)
  • Mary asked Jesus to turn water into wine. She even asked Him again when He originally said no. (John 2:1–12)
  • Hezekiah asked the Lord to add years to his life. (2 Kings 20:1–11)

God loves to take your input into consideration!

#4 Get a new perspective.

Many of us tend to take the decision-making process a bit too personally. Sometimes, it’s good to remove ourselves from the swirl of emotions we’re feeling.

Try bringing in someone you trust who isn’t as emotionally invested in the decision as you are. This could be a friend, family member or wise counselor. Getting an “outsider’s” input may help you gain a new perspective!

#5 Remember, God gives grace.

Take a deep breath and let it out slowly. Making a big decision may sometimes feel like the whole, entire world is depending on your choice—but it really isn’t.

God’s got this, and He’s got you. He isn’t a God who sits up in Heaven with a big stick, waiting to clobber you if you make a mistake or a poor choice. He is rooting for you!

Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Psalm 23:6 NIV

You’ve got the good stuff following you! Having too many good choices to choose from is part of being a child of God—our cups run over with blessings. It’s a good “problem” to have!

Watch for new paths to open up!

I really want to do more for the kingdom as in missions in Latin countries but can’t afford to pay for missions trip itself. So I feel left out. We lost our home to foreclosure & have a 2009 Honda that needs major repair of $3800. My wife & I will be teaching children’s church at a conference on July 31st but will probably not be able to go since the car is not safe. I paid for a hotel room $947. Been praying for a car & home.

    Amen! Very wise council
For many years now I have been so blessed in work that I have had multiple choices in my construction work
Choosing the one God wants me to have has always worked out best
Word in season here today as I am facing this today as I write this response!
    I lean on you Lord
    I lean on you Lord
For the things I need I lean on you
When I don’t know just what to do
I know your love is gonna see me through
You supply my every need I lean on you!
This gospel song comes up in my spirit when it’s time to make these decisions and changes
    Every time
Glad I have made this connection because it is always on spot!
